Faculty Position in New MS Program in Food Systems and Society

The Department of Food Systems and Society at Marylhurst University invites applications for a 
Assistant/Associate F
aculty teaching position in its new Master of Science in Food Systems and Society program.  Responsibilities include teaching foundation courses; organizing on-campus intensive courses, advising students on their theses and developing and maintaining connections in the field of food systems and society.  

  

The MS in Food Systems & Society is a two-year, cohort-based graduate program. Online, seminar-style courses combined with on-campus intensive sessions support development of a robust scholar-practitioner community. The low-residency model enables our students to maintain their existing work and personal commitments as well as engage diverse perspectives and communities.

In this program, we study different visions and perspectives on the food system through inquiry and reflection. Through the consideration of fundamental questions, we analyze how food-system conditions developed and how they are addressed, perceived and portrayed. We examine strategies and efforts to create change in the food system.  By integrating our own experience and knowledge, we assess possibilities for improving equity, health and sustainability in food systems at micro and macro levels.

 Job Description

The staff attorney will assist the Center for Digital Democracy (“CDD”) in developing and
advocating for policies that protect the privacy of children and teens online and protect children and teens from unfair and deceptive advertising practices, especially with regard to food and beverage marketing. The staff attorney will draft comments filed with regulatory agencies, investigate alleged violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, investigate possible violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act’s prohibitions against deceptive and unfair advertising practices, draft requests for investigations, and represent CDD in meetings with government officials, representatives of other consumer groups, and companies engaged in marketing to children and teens. The staff attorney will start in summer 2013. At present, we have sufficient funding for one year and hope to be able to secure additional funding.

Since its founding in 2001 (and prior to that through its predecessor organization, the Center for Media Education), CDD has been at the forefront of research, public education, and advocacy on protecting consumers in the digital age. Its impact has been highly significant, fostering widespread debate, educating a spectrum of stakeholders, and creating a legacy of government and self-­‐regulatory safeguards across a variety of Internet and digital media platforms. CDD’s public education programs are focused on informing consumers, policy makers, and the press about contemporary digital marketing issues, including its impact on public health, children and youth, and financial services. Qualifications

The candidate must be a member of a state bar and have at least one year of legal experience. She or he should be able to conduct thorough factual and legal research, communicate clearly in writing and orally, the ability to work independently and with others, and a strong commitment do public interest work. Having some background in any of the following areas would be a plus: privacy law, internet law, administrative law, legislation, policy work, marketing, health, consumer protection, computer science, and social networks.

General Purpose:Direct legal initiatives and maintain the Rudd Center as a respected and prominent legal voice around obesity and nutrition issues.

Essential Duties
Provide key legal analyses and support for identified policy options concerning food marketing.
Generate specific legal tools such as statutory language or regulations to facilitate key changes in marketing-related food policy based on existing or emerging science.
Assess the legal environment on a global, national, state, or local level on constitutional, statutory, regulatory, or case-based laws and policies that may impact the recommendations of affirmative changes in marketing-related food policy.
Propose meaningful legal solutions to actual or perceived impediments to reforming policy.
Work through the Center’s existing contacts at the federal, state, and local levels to build understanding and support for legal reforms on marketing-related food policies issues.
Develop and submit letters to government entities (e.g., FDA, FTC, AGs) and non-government entities (e.g., industry self-regulatory bodies) about legal issues related to food marketing.
Translate existing scientific findings into essential legal reforms needed to effectuate real change.
Prepare legal memos or synopses on key issues or major developments at the intersection of marketing-related food policy and public health law.
Explore alternative legal approaches taken in varied jurisdictions to make positive changes in marketing-related food policy.
Evaluate the different effects of varied legal approaches.
Contribute to existing scholarship on legal interventions in marketing-related food policy.
Explain legal options concerning food policy for non-lawyers.
Represent the Rudd Center at meetings, conferences, and speaking engagements.
Work collaboratively with other Core Faculty at the Center, the Director of Marketing Initiatives, and the marketing team to carry out priorities.

Education and Experience
Law degree and at least two years related work experience.
Familiarity with food marketing and public health issues.
Experience in public speaking and presentations.
First hand knowledge of Legislative and Executive branch processes.

Skills and Abilities
Excellent writing skills.
Excellent public speaking skills for multiple audiences.
Ability to travel within and outside Connecticut.
