Summer Internships: Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic

Summer interns in the Food Law and Policy Clinic have the unique opportunity to engage in action-based learning to gain a deeper understanding of the complex challenges facing our current food system. Interns get hands-on experience conducting legal and policy research for individuals, community groups, and government agencies on a wide range of food law and policy issues, and are challenged to develop creative legal and policy solutions to pressing food issues. FLPC interns apply their knowledge from the law school classroom to real-world situations.

Examples of projects include: providing policy guidance and advocacy training to state and local food policy councils, assessing how food safety regulations could be amended to increase economic opportunities for small local producers, recommending policies to increase access to healthy food for low-income communities, identifying and breaking down legal barriers inhibiting small-scale and sustainable food production, and drafting state and federal legislation to reduce the amount of wasted food.

As Chief Counsel, the incumbent serves as the legal advisor to the Under Secretary for International Trade with respect to Enforcement and Compliance-related matters. Responsibilities

The Chief Counsel for Trade Enforcement and Compliance will be responsible for planning, carrying out and directing the performance of work and activities as outlined below:
  • Provides legal support to the Assistant Secretary for Enforcement and Compliance for all matters relating to the administration of the antidumping law (19 U.S.C. §1671, et seq) and the countervailing duty law (19 U.S.C. §1673, et seq), including: 1) providing advice during all administrative proceedings and concurring on all preliminary and final administrative determinations; 2) handling related litigation pursuant to Chapter 19 of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA); 3) handling related litigation in the Federal Courts and the World Trade Organization (WTO), in coordination with the Department of Justice or the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), as appropriate; 4) providing legal advice and assistance in connection with other WTO proceedings, including multilateral and bilateral negotiations, and the activities of the Committees on Antidumping and Subsidies and Countervailing Measures; 5) drafting and providing legal advice concerning amendments to the relevant statutes and regulations, in close coordination with other relevant offices within the Department, including the Assistant General Counsel for Legislation and Regulation; 6) providing legal advice assistance in connection with related bi-lateral and multi-lateral negotiations, including those for suspension of antidumping and countervailing duty investigations; and 7)providing analyses and advice with respect to other legal issues concerning imports into the United States.
  • When appropriate, in coordination with USTR, provides advice on questions concerning the consistency with U.S. law and the WTO Agreements of benefits provided by the federal, state, or local governments.
  • Provides legal support with respect to the negotiation and implementation of free trade agreements, to the extend government subsidization or unfair private pricing practices are involved. Advises on the interpretation and application of WTO and other Agreements, to the extent that they relate to government subsidization, private pricing practices, or other matters within the jurisdiction of the Assistant Secretary for Enforcement and Compliance.
  • Provides appropriate legal support to the Under Secretary for International Trade and Assistant Secretary for Enforcement and Compliance, including providing legal advice, litigation support, drafting statutory amendments and regulations, and coordination with other agencies as appropriate, in connection with programs and statutes.
  • Responsible for bringing to the attention of the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel all matters that have significant policy or legal implications.
  • Coordinates with Chief Counsels for the Bureau of Industry and Security and International Commerce on all trade-related legal matters that raise issues within their respective jurisdictions. Provides referrals and assistance to the Assistant General Counsel for Legislation, Regulation and Oversight concerning legislation, Congressional testimony, and regulatory issues for client offices. Provides referrals and assistance to the Assistant General Counsel for Administration and Transactions and the Assistant General Counsel for Employment, Litigation, and Information on personnel and other administrative law matters for client offices.
  • Provides first level or second level supervision for attorneys, paralegal specialists and support staff, including recruiting, assigning work, evaluation performance, resolving personnel problems and recommending promotions and awards.

The Alaska office of Earthjustice is seeking applications for an Associate Attorney position.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Farm Manager co-manages with the Field and Facilities Manager, planning and implementing daily activities at Red Wiggler. The Farm Manager's primary responsibilities for our vegetable operation include: greenhouse management, implementing planting schedules, managing work crews, harvesting, and post-harvest handling and distribution. Management activities include managing volunteers and growers, setting vocational goals, teaching job skills, and tracking skills development. The Farm Manager will participate in overall leadership of the nonprofit including: developing and implementing safety practices, hiring and supervising seasonal staff and apprentices, and participating in strategic planning.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of four years of experience in sustainable farming, with at least two years of proven farm management experience
  • Experience with greenhouse management, post-harvest handling, and storage of vegetables
  • Strong mathematical and computer skills, including calculating distributions and keeping records of planting, harvest, and distribution
  • An associate’s degree or relevant experience
  • Experience working with students and people with developmental/intellectual disabilities will be helpful

Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles (SEE-LA) is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that operates Certified Farmers’ Markets in the metropolitan Los Angeles area, including the largest, the Sunday Hollywood Farmers’ Market which celebrated 26 years of service in 2017.  Other Markets include Echo Park, Atwater Village, Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, Central Avenue and Watts/Willowbrook MLK Hospital Campus.

SEE-LA also is a statewide leader in the SNAP/EBT, WIC and Market Match benefit and incentive programs which provide the opportunity for low-income customers to purchase the freshest fruits and vegetables available at local farmers’ markets.  SEE-LA has also experienced tremendous growth in recent years through expansion of its Champions for Change/Pompea Smith Good Cooking Buena Cocina Nutrition Education program in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.  

The mission of SEE-LA is to build sustainable food systems and promote social and cultural activities that benefit both low-to-moderate income residents of Los Angeles while also supporting California small- and mid-sized farms and local small businesses.  SEE-LA’s current fiscal year operating budget is approximately $1.7 million dollars.  SEE-LA currently has a total staff of 31 full and part-time employees and its administrative offices are located in Hollywood.    
JOB DESCRIPTION
Primary Function of Executive Director:
The role of Executive Director (ED) of SEE-LA is accountable for providing leadership, fiscal oversight, strategic direction and a clear vision for the development and achievement of the organization’s mission in partnership with the 12 member Board of Directors.  The ED has the primary role in developing new and innovative plans for strategic planning, fund development, staff development, annual budgeting, marketing and public relations as well as setting organizational policies and standards.  The ED is also tasked with identifying new programs and initiatives to enhance the agency and further its mission and services.  In addition to providing organizational leadership, the ED must be comfortable with and able to work with a myriad of funders corporate, private and governmental as well as many community stakeholders.     

Required Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
  • The Executive Director must be an empowering lead of the organization, collaborative thinker and creative problem-solver with outstanding communication and diplomatic skills;
  • Possess at least 5-7 years of successful leadership experience in a diverse organization;
  • Demonstrate solid general management skills including managing many diverse groups of people possessing different interests and talents, ability to exercise change management when necessary, the ability to make very difficult budget decisions when required, financial skill ability, fund development and fundraising, and comfort with all types of contributor including government, corporate, foundation and individuals of all backgrounds as well as experience managing contract staff and services;
  • Grant Proposal writing experience;
  • Experience working with nonprofit Boards and members of myriad backgrounds, interests and financial resources;
  • Public speaking experience and ease preferred;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with both professional as well as support personnel.

Major Responsibilities (but not limited to):
  • Assumes fiduciary responsibility of managing SEE-LA’s annual operating budget to ensure fiscal solvency, prepare the annual budget in conjunction with the Board and ultimate budget approval by the Board, ensures the staff adhere to the approved budget and develops a long-term plan to maintain financial sustainability of SEE-LA and facilitation of agency annual audit(s);
  • Manages and oversees the fund development efforts of SEE-LA, including planning, strategies and implementation, tracks and determines the financial needs of the organization. Monitors current and future revenue streams including individual donations and grants as well as annual fundraising event productions and goals, as well as ensuring all contract and grant compliance as well as annual tax return (IRS 990) filings;   
  • Works in a collaborative and cooperative manner many various SEE-LA stakeholder groups of divergent backgrounds, including funders, community representatives, political figures and government officials, farmers, artisans and local businesses;
  • Oversees and manages all of SEE-LA’s programs, projects and commitments to ensure successful implementation and that each program and farmers’ market has the necessary resources, both financial and human that is needed to function efficiently;
  • Hires, develops, manages and supports a high quality and productive staff through supervision, delegation and internal and external staff development and team-building and performance evaluation. Provide staff with opportunities for growth where possible through the budget;
  • Serves as a non-voting member of the SEE-LA Board of Directors. Supports Board meeting administration including attending and reporting at all Board meetings and keeping all Board members updated on the current status of the organization and advising Board on all pertinent strategies, resolutions, and issues of importance at-hand;
  • Stays informed of new industry developments and trends in order to create a strategic vision that supports growth and relevance of SEE-LA.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is currently seeking a Policy Intern for the spring term beginning in early January 2018 and lasting until mid-May 2018.  This position is paid, full-time, and is located at NSAC’s Washington, D.C. office on Capitol Hill.
NSAC is the leading advocacy organization for federal policy that supports sustainable agriculture and food systems.  NSAC’s collaborative work environment offers a unique career opportunity to advance federal sustainable agriculture policy as part of a dedicated and effective team.  The Policy Intern will have the opportunity to work on a range of issues and campaigns, including local and regional food systems, working lands conservation, beginning and minority farmer issues, sustainable agriculture research, crop insurance reform and much more. The spring policy intern will have the opportunity to directly engage in NSAC’s 2018 Farm Bill campaign.

Position Description
NSAC’s Policy Intern will work closely with NSAC’s policy team on the full range of daily activities in our fast-paced D.C. office, including:
  • Support policy staff with Hill outreach
  • Attend meetings and Congressional hearings and report back to staff
  • Conduct research and data analysis to support policy development
  • Write policy blog posts and contribute to Federal Register comments (as applicable)
  • Manage dissemination of Weekly Roundup newsletter
  • Provide backup support for incoming calls and other administrative duties
  • Assist with other projects and assignments as needed

Qualifications
  • An understanding of and passion for sustainable agriculture
  • Basic knowledge of the federal policy-making process
  • An appreciation for how federal policies may affect different constituencies, including historically under-represented communities, and willingness to apply an equity lens
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent research skills
  • Ability to both work independently and be a good team player
  • Willingness to work around a demanding congressional schedule and deadlines

This position would work with our fishermen and management team to oversee our company-wide farmers markets program.
 
Specific Position Responsibilities:
  • Identify and pursue growth opportunities for a farmers market program that operates in up to 40 weekly markets in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana.
  • Improve and implement clear operation and communication policies.
  • Direct and support up to a dozen junior-level and temporary employees.
  • Track and manage program budget.

  • Manage farmers’ market applications and health department permits.
  • Generate monthly data-driven recap of farmers’ markets.

Job Scope and Remuneration:
This is a year-round, full-time management position beginning January 1, 2018. Work may be completed on-site at our Schaumburg Good Fish Hub and from remote Chicagoland locations.  This position requires weekends, especially during summer market season.

Salary: $40,000.00-$45,000.00 annually, DOE, with generous benefits that include health insurance, vacations, and plenty of fish!
