The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit consumer-advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on nutrition and food safety. CSPI seeks a highly motivated and creative public-interest-oriented attorney who wants to protect the public by changing corporate behavior and influencing government policies. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced consumer class action attorney to lead the Litigation Project in one of the nation’s top consumer-advocacy organizations.
The LitigationProject uses state and federal courts to help correct corporate misbehavior. The project brings its own advocacy lawsuits, working with private lawyers across the country. CSPI’s legal filings have produced binding settlements resulting in more honest labeling of artificial ingredients and halting deceptive marketing.

  • Executes, surveillance, investigative and enforcement, goals, objectives and strategy for the FSIS enforcement programs to promote compliance with and enforcement of meat, poultry and egg products inspections laws and regulations from production through distribution.
  • Exercise primary responsibility for trace forward and trace back activities associated with foodborne illness outbreaks, natural disasters and intentional contaminations events.
  • Exercises the primary responsibility for evaluation and review of FSIS, State and foreign programs oriented toward good safety, consumer protection and public health and monitors correction of any problems identified. Provides leadership and technical expertise to program managers throughout the Agency in evaluating their proposals and in carrying out their management control. Explains Agency programs to external oversight bodies and constituency groups and leads the response to and implementation of external audit finding and recommendations.
  • Develops, fosters and provides overall coordination of cooperative relationships and activities with Federal, State, local and private agencies and organizations as well as with foreign officials aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of national and international meat, poultry and egg products public health and compliance programs.
  • Keeps the Administrator, Deputy Administrator and other key Agency officials fully informed of program related considerations having significant bearing on the planning development and administration of the overall Agency meat, poultry and egg product regulatory and public health operations.

As a basic requirement for entry into the SES, applicants must provide evidence of progressively responsible leadership experience that is indicative of senior executive level managerial capability and directly related to the skills and abilities outlined under Mandatory Technical Qualifications and Executive Core Qualifications.
Typically, experience of this nature will have been gained at or above the GS-15 grade level in the Federal service, or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or non- governmental organizations. Your resume needs to emphasize your level of responsibilities, the scope and complexity of programs managed, and your program accomplishments, including the results of your actions.
Failure to meet the basic qualification requirement and all Mandatory Technical and Executive Core Qualification factors automatically disqualifies an applicant.

A. EXECUTIVE CORE QUALIFICATIONS (ECQ): All applicants must submit written statements. Your narrative response must not exceed two (2) pages per ECQ.
The ECQs were designed to assess executive experience and potential not technical expertise. They measure whether an individual has the broad executive skills needed to succeed in a variety of SES positions.
