About this Career Opportunity

The Staff Attorney will provide sound and constructive legal advice on compliance and risk issues to colleagues in all departments of the Physicians Committee and affiliated organizations. The Staff Attorney will also participate in legal advocacy pursued by the Physicians Committee, including litigation, legislation, and other legal efforts to effectuate the missions of the affiliated organizations. Essential functions will include:

Provide general corporate advice to team members:

  • Ensure organizations function consistent with tax exempt status.
  • Review, negotiate, and draft contracts, vendor agreements, grant agreements, MOUs, and other legal agreements. Advise on contract issues, including compliance, amendment, and termination.
  • Advise on personnel and human resources matters.
  • Advise on intellectual property matters, including trademark filings and infringements and copyright advice and compliance.
  • Advise on potential litigation risks associated with correspondence, advertisements, or public advocacy statements.
  • Advise on obtaining legal permission to conduct activities, such as demonstrations on public property.
  • Review trusts and estate correspondence to ensure records are complete and to determine organization’s interest.
  • Advise and report on lobbying activities and compliance.
  • Retain outside counsel on matters requiring special expertise.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local lobbying requirements.
  • Maintain highest levels of corporate governance for all affiliated organizations.
  • Research health care law issues (e.g., HIPAA, Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law).

Pursue legal advocacy efforts to support Physicians Committee campaigns:

  • Draft memoranda, pleadings, and documents in support of campaigns, maximizing media attention.
  • File lawsuits under public records laws and federal Administrative Procedure Act.
  • Brainstorm with campaign staff on potential new lawsuits, analyze potential suits raising new legal issues, and advise on litigation strategy.
  • Assist staff in interpreting statutes and regulations.
  • Draft and file petitions.
  • Draft clear and precise memoranda and legal briefs as needed.
  • Assist in drafting requests for public records and related administrative appeals.
  • Perform legal research on local cruelty laws; state, federal, and international animal research laws; and open government laws.
  • Retain and work with outside counsel and prosecutors as necessary.
  • This is a full-time position that may be performed at our office or remotely from any location in the United States. The Physicians Committee is headquartered in Washington, D.C. (Friendship Heights on Metro’s Red Line).

Organic Farming Research Foundation, Policy and Programs Manager




The Organic Farming Research Foundation is seeking a Policy and Programs Manager to conduct in-depth analysis of federal and state funded policy and programs and develop and coordinate legislative and regulatory campaigns to ensure such programs effectively support the needs of organic farmers. This position offers a great opportunity for the right candidate to interact with federal agency staff, political officials, non-profit partners and other diverse stakeholders to advocate on behalf of organic farmers and scientists.
This is a full-time, exempt position, eligible for benefits. OFRF’s primary office is in Santa Cruz, CA but this position is fully remote. DC-based candidates are strongly encouraged, but not required. The Policy and Programs Manager reports to the Executive Director (ED).

Roles and Responsibilities 

Monitor and analyze federal legislative and regulatory policy as it pertains to organic farming and how well USDA programs (particularly research, technical assistance, and conservation programs) serve the organic sector.
Develop written positions/recommendations/issue briefs on key federal policy and programs to support the priorities of organic farmers as identified in OFRF’s National Organic Research Agenda.
Advance organic as a key component to climate mitigation and adaptation in federal policy.
Represent OFRF at meetings with policy makers, grower groups, and coalition partners.
Position OFRF as a reliable resource for Hill, USDA and other agency staff.
In some cases, may support state policy efforts to advance organic farming research.
Contribute to OFRF projects and programs, usually through research, writing or analysis.
Manage some OFRF projects and grants (overseeing contractors, deliverables, and reporting).
Cultivate diverse partnerships with NGOs, businesses, academic institutions, and other organizations to advance policy goals and develop new program and partnership initiatives.
Write monthly blogs or articles about policy issues for the OFRF website and newsletter.
Contribute to OFRF’s presence on social media through frequent sharing of relevant news and original posts on OFRF’s policy work.
Manage grassroots advocacy organizing efforts such as action alerts.
Design and implement activities to increase organic farmer engagement on policy issues.
Collaborate with colleagues in project, program, and strategic planning.
Keep Executive Director, Board of Directors, and staff apprised of current policy issues.
Support fundraising and grant writing for program activities
Staff the Policy and Program Committee of the OFRF Board of Directors.
Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications and Skills

Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in similar role.
Masters, JD, or other relevant degree strongly preferred.
Knowledge about organic agriculture, food systems, and climate change.
Deep understanding of federal legislative and regulatory processes.
Ability to think strategically about application of research and research policy to support the organization’s goals.

Responsibilities 

Counsel Global Marketing, R&D and PACS clients on what the Company can communicate publicly regarding the attributes of its products, ingredients, and packaging (in conjunction with SRA)
Collaborate with Global Marketing, R&D, IPG, SRA, and with business unit counsel to facilitate the development and launch of new products, which includes finding solutions and providing advice with respect to:
the substantiation of claims to be made in a wide range of media and on product labels;
regulatory issues regarding ingredients and other substances; and labeling compliance
Perform due diligence with respect to the food and advertising law aspects of potential acquisitions (done in conjunction with SRA)
Manage the timely and effective review and approval of submissions from business units around the world to the Company’s global review process for communications requiring substantiation, including:
evaluating claims to be used on product labels and in a wide range of media, including digital media, and the substantiation thereof; and supporting SRA’s overall management of the review process
Oversee management and defense of lawsuits, arbitrations and other litigation matters, particularly those related to food law, labeling, marketing and advertising; negotiate settlements of litigation/claims where appropriate; manage outside counsel to ensure zealous representation of the Company’s legal and business interests; provide regular updates on litigation matters for audit and financial reporting.
Advise business stakeholders and management on litigation risks and threats; assess potential litigation exposure and costs; provide counsel to avoid or mitigate litigation risk.
Provide counsel regarding the food law aspects of the Company’s contractual relationships with and obligations to third parties (e.g., bottlers, customers, suppliers, sponsorship properties, and others)
Track legislative and regulatory developments and educate clients regarding their impact
Draft opinions and materials to explain food law and advertising substantiation issues to clients
Support SRA in addressing regulatory compliance issues
Serve, as needed, on IMCR teams in connection with recalls and other matters
Build and develop effective working relationships with clients and other lawyers
Provide support to Senior Food Law Counsel
Continue to develop expertise in food law and advertising substantiation through on-the-job training and Continuing Legal Education (CLE)
Review public and internal communications by the Company regarding newly published studies and other information about health and nutrition matters relating to the Company’s products (in conjunction with SRA)

Qualifications & Requirements

U.S. Juris Doctor degree and a practicing member of a U.S. state or international bar. Strong academic credentials required.
A minimum of 5 years experience in a large national law firm and or corporate legal department with demonstrated experience in counseling business clients regarding regulatory matters and litigation
Experience in the areas of food and drug regulation and advertising substantiation strongly preferred
Litigation experience required

Duties And Responsibilities

At least 3-5 years of public policy experience in Congress, the Executive Branch, or related non-profit or private sector employment.

Demonstrated experience engaging and mobilizing grassroots advocates in public policy.

Demonstrated knowledge of the federal legislative, appropriations, and rulemaking processes.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex concepts in understandable language.

Ability to think strategically, establish priorities, and independently manage multiple tasks in a fast-moving, high-workload environment.

Turner Environmental Law Clinic Fellowship (Post Doctoral Fellow)

 

The Turner Environmental Law Clinic at Emory University School of Law (“Turner Clinic”) is seeking applications for its 2022-2024 Postgraduate Environmental Law Fellowship. The fellowship is offered as a two-year position, with the possibility of renewal for an additional one-year term. 

 

Fellowship Description: The fellowship provides a unique opportunity for a recent law school graduate to grow as an effective environmental advocate, while fighting for clean and sustainable energy, promoting regenerative agriculture and local food systems, and protecting our natural resources and communities. The fellowship focuses on training influential attorneys and academics specializing in public interest environmental law. It also provides intensive opportunities to develop clinical education skills.  

 

Fellowship Responsibilities: The fellow will work closely with Turner Clinic faculty and staff, and will report directly to the Director of the Turner Clinic. The fellow will assist with legal research, litigation, transactional negotiations, policy development, capacity-building, community partnerships, teaching and supervision of clinical students, and advocacy in furtherance of the Turner Clinic’s mission. The responsibilities of the fellow will include, at a minimum:

 

  • Supervising students and providing skills instruction in the Turner Clinic, and occasional teaching in related environmental law classes.
  • Representing the Turner Clinic’s clients in complex civil litigation, transactional, and policy matters, while working closely with co-counsel, expert witnesses, community leaders, and government officials.
  • Researching and writing articles, policy papers, or other approved writing projects of publishable quality on topics related to environmental law.
  • Leading and participating in ongoing environmental advocacy efforts.
  • Collaborating with Turner Clinic faculty on environmental law and research projects.
  • Representing the Turner Clinic in advocacy coalitions, strategic partnerships, and community engagement events and activities.
  • Developing independent areas of interest, consistent with the mission of the Turner Clinic.

 

Qualifications:  Priority will be given to law school graduates within three years of law school graduation who have a demonstrated interest in public interest environmental law; strong research and writing skills; and environmental litigation, transactional, policy, or advocacy experience. Candidates must be able to exercise independent judgment about the priority issues and critical relationships of central concern to the Turner Clinic; responsibly manage multiple representations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; provide meaningful instruction to students; and complete assignments with minimal supervision.

We urge supermarkets and other large food retail stores to shift the mix of products that they promote and make available to consumers. Through research and pilot programs, we aim to create evidence-based campaigns that will be both beneficial to the health of consumers and economically sustainable for retailers. We advocate for policy and programmatic changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that create a healthier food environment. And we are leading efforts to have federal and state agencies end trade practices that stifle fair competition among food manufacturers and that reinforce the marketing of unhealthy food by retailers.

The Policy Associate position reports to the Senior Policy Scientist. The Policy Associate will operate out of CSPI’s Washington, DC office or remotely.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Work with the Senior Policy Associate to develop and implement advocacy goals and strategies for nutrition policy campaigns. Collaborate with outreach and capacity building, communications, scientific, legal, and other policy staff.

    Strengthen existing relationships and broaden support for food and nutrition policies with partners and elected and appointed officials at the national, state, and local levels, including groups and individuals advocating for public health, racial and health equity and social justice.

    Provide technical assistance, materials, and strategic advice to organizations, coalitions, and policy makers, mobilize grassroots, support federal, state and local advocacy (including lobbying) efforts in support of food and nutrition policies.

    Write and develop advocacy materials, including: fact sheets, reports, letters, social media posts, testimony, petitions, infographics, talking points, and action alerts.

    Review scientific literature to inform policy positions and advocacy strategies.

    Organize and represent CSPI at meetings, events, briefings, webinars, calls, and with the press.

    Supervise interns.

    Carry out other departmental activities as needed.

Maryland Sea Grant/Agriculture Law Education Initiative Legal Policy Fellowship

Maryland Sea Grant (MDSG) and the Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI) are excited to invite applications for a one-year legal fellowship. Please come join our dynamic team of legal experts and scientists to work at the exciting interface of law, policy, and environmental research. This one year fellowship has the possibility for a second year renewal in mutual agreement between the fellow, MDSG, and funding availability.

MDSG supports research, education, extension, and outreach on critical environmental issues in the Chesapeake and coastal bays and their watersheds. ALEI is comprised of legal specialists and other extension specialists who help agricultural producers understand and comply with state, federal, and local laws and regulations.

The Maryland Sea Grant legal fellow will help work toward these goals through projects involving training and programming for government agencies, coastal industries, and coastal communities addressing coastal law and policy in Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay.

Fellows will be contractual employees of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science-MDSG. This position is full-time with benefits, Contractual Contingent 2, with an expected salary of $54,000 plus fringe benefits including healthcare options.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have earned a J.D. or equivalent LL.M. for foreign-trained attorneys no earlier than June 2018
  • Interest in exploring environmental legal research relevant to underresourced communities in coastal communities. 
  • Enthusiasm for pursuing a career in the areas of natural resource management, protection, or stewardship, or public or policy or law of marine and/or coastal environments
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
