Food Systems Specialist - Arizona Dept of Health Services

Phoenix, AZ: Food Systems Specialist - Health Program Manager II Bureau of Nutrition and Physical Activity with the Arizona Dept of Health Services Summary: This position is responsible for Advancing Arizona’s efforts to promote and increase access to healthy, affordable and locally grown food. The Food Systems Specialist is responsible for providing training and technical assistance to local farmers and businesses, developing policies, and building partnerships with external partners to promote policy change initiatives for healthy eating. This position is responsible for writing state plans to obtain federal grants, planning for services, overseeing contractors through the ADHS procurement processes, planning budgets and payments for services, and writing policies and procedures. Responsibilities include: – Providing leadership in planning, developing, coordinating, evaluating, and implementing comprehensive policy, systems, and environmental change strategies related to food systems to prevent obesity and chronic diseases. – Assisting with or leading trainings, workshops, and conferences in order to increase knowledge related to food systems. – Planning, conducting, and evaluating trainings for authorized growers, markets, and local agencies. – Providing technical assistance to local agencies, local agriculture industries, growers, and communities. – Recruiting and maintaining partnerships with hunger advocates, local agricultural industries, government agencies, food banks, farmers’ market managers and supporters, growers, retailers, and others. – Supporting a diverse multi-cultural workforce that reflects the community, promotes equal opportunity at all levels of ADHS, and creates an inclusive work environment that enables all individuals to perform to their fullest potential free from discrimination. Graduate Assistantships: LL.M. Program in Ag & Food Law

The LL.M. Program in Agricultural & Food Law has a few places remaining in our face-to-face and distance tracks for Fall 2016, for full or part-time enrollment. With an expanded curriculum and a deep base of alumni relationships, our Program prepares attorneys for a career in agricultural and food law. We have several remaining Graduate Assistantships (GAs) to award. GAs are only available to full time LL.M. candidates who enroll in our face-to-face program. These GAs provide for a full tuition waiver plus a $5,000 stipend per semester in exchange for part-time work designed to enhance the student's education and build their professional reputation. While awards may shift to accommodate the expertise of applicants, GA placements are likely to include:
  • An opportunity to work with firms practicing food law, including one placement with our alumna, Lauren Handel, Handel Food Law
General law school GAs may also be available and include 
  • An opportunity to work with Accelerated JD candidates from foreign jurisdictions, assisting them with their transition to a U.S. law school setting;  
  • An opportunity to teach a Pre-Law Political Science class that introduces undergraduates to basic elements of our legal system and encourages them to explore a legal education:
  • An opportunity to teach an Upper Level Legal Writing class that focuses on Civil Pre-Trial documents (opportunity limited to attorneys with practice experience and/or LRW teaching experience);

    Position Description

    Green Mountain Farm-to-School (GMFTS) seeks a dynamic, passionate, experienced nonprofit leader who will grow our efforts to strengthen local food systems in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. The Executive Director (ED) will:

    Lead GMFTS by managing the finances, staff, programs, and structure required to enact GMFTS’s mission

    Ensure GMFTS’s sustainability by managing the budget in cooperation with the board

    Increase GMFTS’s visibility by serving as the external face of the organization and developing partnerships to support the organization’s mission

    Be responsible for the implementation of the GMFTS Strategic Plan, as well as setting and achieving ambitious goals in cooperation with the board.

    The ED must have a passion for the GMFTS work, demonstrated strengths in marketing and fundraising, a strategic vision, and the ability to support day-to-day operations of a small organization. Complete job description here.
