Cornucopia Institute seeks Farm & Food Policy Analyst

The Cornucopia Institute is seeking an Farm & Food Policy Analyst to join its team conducting research and investigations into organic and sustainable food and farming production practices. This individual will also be involved with networking and communicating with farmers, consumers, and other organizations. A heartfelt passion for protecting the environment, the good food movement, humane livestock husbandry and social/economic justice for family farmers is a plus.

The Cornucopia Institute is formally based in Cornucopia, Wisconsin but is "virtually officed," and thus has no central office. The Cornucopia Institute has eight core staff members and additional support from a number of dedicated contractors. The Farm and Food Policy Analyst is expected to provide his or her own worksite. Because of this, work with Cornucopia is possible anywhere in the U.S. Candidates residing in, or relocating to, the upper Midwest are encouraged to apply—facilitating periodic face-to-face meetings. But ultimate hiring decisions will be made based on the credentials of the candidates. Several core-staff and contractors are located in or near Vernon County, Wisconsin. Candidates open to relocation might find this gorgeous and rugged environment, and its unique agrarian community, a wonderful option.

Chief Legal Counsel, Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA)


The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) is seeking a motivated and highly competent attorney to serve as the chief legal counsel to the Secretary of Agriculture. This individual will serve on the Secretary’s executive team and manage a team of KDA staff attorneys and support staff. This position is responsible for providing legal representation, advice and counsel on all areas of law and regulatory matters related to the agency. The position will initially be located in Topeka, but will re-locate to Manhattan along with the rest of the Department of Agriculture’s central office by July 2014, and will play an instrumental part in that transition. Previous legal experience and management experience is highly desired.

Staff Attorney; Dairy Farmers of America

General Purpose:
This position reports to the Vice President, Legal, and is responsible for handling legal matters for the company and supporting the Vice President, Legal on the compliance program, policies and regulatory matters, and monitoring, maintaining, and ensuring adherence to all company compliance programs and policies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
-Monitor state and federal regulatory trends, activities, and requirements, including, without limitation, FDA, USDA, OSHA, EPA, CFTC, CBP, FTC, DOT, DOL, and BIS;
-Conduct employee training related to company’s Code of Conduct and all relevant state and federal laws;
-Under the direction of the Vice President, Legal, manage internal control and audit systems to prevent and detect noncompliance with company policies, laws, and regulations;
-Assist in updating company compliance policies;
-Collaborate and maintain an effective working relationship with various business units to identify and mitigate compliance and regulatory risks;
-Provide counsel, advice, and legal services to all areas of the company, including without limitation, transactions, disputes, regulatory issues, contracts, and other matters;
-Draft company policies and procedures;
-Review and interpret case law, statutes, regulations, and pending legislation;
-Prepare and issue legal opinions identifying possible regulatory and liability issues;
-Coordinate comments on regulatory rulemaking on behalf of company;
-Draft contracts, agreements, letters, and other legal documents;
-Display initiative, creativity, problem solving, and sound decision-making in fast paced work environment.

Program Coordinator - Farm Journal Foundation

The Farm Journal Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit launched by Farm Journal Media, the nation's leading agricultural media company. Founded in 2010, the Foundation is dedicated to sustaining U.S. agriculture's ability to serve the vital needs of a growing world population with education and assistance, focused on the unique interests of people and organizations aligned with U.S. agriculture. Its flagship initiative, Farmers Feeding the World, is dedicated to representing the role of the farmer in defeating world hunger through education, assistance and advocacy.
This position primarily involves overseeing the implementation of a grant received by the foundation. The Program Coordinator is also responsible for supporting the activities of the Farm Journal Foundation and Farmers Feeding the World initiative. This includes administrative and creative tasks.
Responsibilities:
  • Grant management and donor relations.
  • Managing grassroots communications and social media.
  • Measuring outcomes, compliance with project goals and metrics, and some reporting.
  • Coordinating travel and visits with program partners, participants, and speakers.
  • Assisting with public and media relations.
  • Liaise between foundation programs and measure alignment with goals.
  • Event planning and promotions.
  • Coordinating/executing special projects as they arise.
  • Some policy research.
  • Grassroots organizing.
  • Scheduling meetings and events.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required, 1-3 years previous experience preferred.
  • Degrees in agricultural economics, international development, international affairs, food policy, agricultural communication, agricultural journalism, or related majors preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task are essential.
  • Experience with event planning and experiential marketing.
  • Experience with development, fundraising, and project/budget management.
  • Command of social media platforms.
Competitive salary with benefits package.
Travel up to 20%.
