Position Description

The National Farm to School Network (NFSN) is seeking a Senior Director of Programs and Policy to lead the strategic direction of programming and policy advocacy aimed at institutionalizing farm to school in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. Territories.

Responsibilities include successful implementation of programs and policy activities with an eye towards innovation, oversight of Core and Supporting Partner engagement and capacity building, and cultivation of strategic partnerships with national organizations and federal agencies to advance NFSN’s mission. The Senior Director will manage overall direction and leadership for the function areas of programs and policy, including staff management. This position will remain open until filled. Staff Attorney: Native American Agriculture Law Initiative at FLAG

Farmers’ Legal Action Group (FLAG) seeks a Staff Attorney for its Native American Agriculture Law Center (NAALC).

NAALC is a national program of FLAG exclusively serving Native American farmers, ranchers, fishers, their communities, and their advocates. The NAALC Staff Attorney will work on legal issues relating to Native American farmers, ranchers, and fishers, including farm, ranch, and fishing income; operating and ownership credit; leases and permits; disaster assistance; natural resources conservation, stewardship, and sustainability; crop insurance and risk management; marketing and other contracts; organic production; food safety; food hubs; discrimination; and other support for farmers, ranchers, and fishers.

This work will be performed by (1) assisting partner organizations in the analysis and development of effective public policy, programs, and regulations; (2) creating or updating relevant legal educational materials and publications; (3) traveling to Indian reservations and communities to hold educational meetings on government programs, discrimination, and other legal issues; (4) providing legal training and support to farmers, ranchers, fishers, and agriculture-related advocates and organizations; (5) representing individual Native Americans in administrative hearings, appeals, and non-litigation legal matters; and, (6) performing other relevant legal duties.

Applicants must be licensed to practice law (in any state), have a minimum of two years of legal experience, and have a strong commitment to providing legal services and support to Native American farmers, ranchers, fishers, their communities, and their advocates.

Candidates also must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, handle a significant workload, and work collaboratively with NAALC, FLAG, the Native American communities served, and other partner organizations.

Overnight travel throughout the United States will be frequently required. Knowledge of Native American cultures, history and languages is highly preferred. Experience with agriculture law as it relates to federal, tribal, and state laws impacting tribes and tribal members is strongly desired.

Salary is based on experience, within a range of regional nonprofit attorney salaries. Benefits include health insurance, dental insurance, a 401(k), paid time off, and holidays.

Senior Policy Associate, San Diego Food System Alliance

The mission of San Diego Food System Alliance (Alliance) is to cultivate a healthy, sustainable, and just food system in San Diego County. The Alliance is a diverse and inclusive network that works in partnership across sectors to promote collaboration, influence policy, and catalyze transformation in the food system. Our work is grounded in a shared vision for change, and is informed by the experience and expertise of our network and the broader community. Together with local nonprofit organizations, businesses, public agencies, institutions, funders, farmers, fisherfolk, food makers, food chain workers, food buyers, chefs, and residents we are working to build a better food system in San Diego County, one that will restore ourselves and our communities, protect our environment, and transform our local economy. The Alliance was officially launched in September 2012 out of a recommendation from the San Diego Food System Assessment and the Urban-Rural Roundtable, convened by Roots of Change, San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts and Mayor Jerry Sanders.

Senior Policy Associate is a new role at the Alliance and will be responsible for conducting policy research, analysis, and outreach in support of several of the Alliance Working Groups and network to advance policy, system, and environmental changes for the regional food system. The Senior Policy Associate will be a critical role for the Alliance as it launches a strategic visioning process for the San Diego food system, San Diego Food Vision 2030. This role is both strategic and tactical, requiring the ability to think big while managing details, working collaboratively with the Alliance staff and network. Senior Policy Associate will develop research and policy recommendations, through a collaborative process with Alliance Working Groups and the wider network on food justice and regional food system issues. The Senior Policy Associate is a seasoned professional who enjoys working independently and collaboratively as part of the Alliance staff team. A passion for food justice and inequities within the food system is critical for this role. The Senior Policy Associate may be responsible for managing associates, interns, contractors, and vendors to support activities.

Job Title: Assistant or Associate Professor, Sustainable Food Systems

The O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University seeks applicants from public policy and affairs, governance, or other social sciences with a demonstrated expertise in food systems dynamics for an Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor. The applicant’s research should address the coupled nature of food systems and sustainability. We are particularly interested in candidates studying food systems within a U.S. context. We are also interested in candidates who work across disciplines with a record of interdisciplinary collaboration. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an extramurally-supported research program. Candidates may be appointed at the rank of assistant or associate professor.

This position is partially funded by Indiana University Bloomington’s Emerging Areas of Research initiative (http://ovpr.indiana.edu/ear1/ear1/), which underwrites the Sustainable Food Systems Science (SFSS) program. The SFSS team seeks to understand sustainable food system development by studying the leverage points used to build more resilient and sustainable food systems. The candidate will contribute to the O’Neill School’s developing food systems research/curriculum and engage with the SFSS program scholars to bolster IU’s capacity and contribution the field.

Opportunities to Develop Ag & Food Law Expertise


The LL.M. Program in Agricultural & Food Law  still has positions available in our Fall 2019 class. We offer fully integrated on-campus and distance attendance options, for full or part-time enrollment.

Students who attend the Program on-campus, with full time enrollment are eligible to apply for our Graduate Assistantship / Fellowship (GA) Program. The award of a GA provides for a full tuition waiver for all LL.M. classes (up to 15 credits per semester), payment of a stipend of $5,000 per semester, and enrollment in the University of Arkansas health insurance system, with the University paying a portion of the premium.  GAs agree to perform work assignments designed to supplement their educational experience and enhance their credentials.

Many of our LL.M. degree candidates are part-time distance students who work full time in a professional capacity. We have USDA employees, practicing attorneys, judicial clerks, state government staff attorneys, and many other skilled professionals as well as recent law graduates. Distance students can video-conference into our class discussions and sometimes come to campus to attend the on-campus portion of condensed courses. Students take as many credits as they wish. Distance students are not eligible for our GAs, but they receive the benefit of paying in-state tuition rates even when they are located outside of Arkansas. Current tuition is less than $600/credit (plus UA fees).  Our classes are all either 1 or 2 credits.

Food Systems, Nutrition and Health Position at Univ of Washington

We are delighted to announce that the University of Washington has a new
posting for an Assistant Professor in Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health!
This is a full-time (100% FTE) faculty position with an anticipated start date
of October 2019.

This new faculty position will provide sustained research, teaching, and
service expertise in the areas of food systems, nutrition, and population
health with an emphasis in systems modeling. The new hire will be a member of
the core instructional team for the UW Nutritional Sciences Program’s recently
launched BA in Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health

The successful applicant will have a PhD or foreign equivalent in nutrition,
food systems, or a closely related field.
