Job Description

The Environmental Law Institute (ELI), a non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C., is a leading center of environmental research, policy analysis, publishing, and training.  We seek an entrepreneurial policy and research professional to join our professional staff as the Program Director, Research and Policy.  The Program Director, Research and Policy reports to the Vice President of Research & Policy and will lead new policy, educational, and research programs while supporting others’ work and projects.
Founded in 1969, ELI has played a pivotal role in the evolution of environmental law. Today, ELI is an internationally-recognized organization whose interdisciplinary staff of lawyers and scientists works to develop creative solutions to critical problems in environmental law, policy, and management worldwide. Support for the Institute's research comes from a mix of foundations, donors, and state and federal government agencies.
 
The ideal Program Director, Research and Policy candidate will possess 7-15 years of related experience and be a visionary able to conceptualize, develop, and lead new policy, educational, and research programs while supporting others’ work and projects. The candidate will contribute to the products and publications of ELI and should be an excellent public speaker, able to represent the organization publicly in a manner consistent with our mission and values while maintaining the organization’s reputation for excellence in education, research and publishing

Qualifications

Qualifications include a J.D. or PhD;  7-15 years of related experience; broad knowledge of and experience in environmental, energy or natural resources law and policy; demonstrated excellence in writing and analysis; and the ability to manage people and projects, meet deadlines, and develop and meet budgets.  Foreign language skills and experience in training or teaching, developing or managing an NGO, or professional facilitation or convening are a plus.
