Policy Director (interim, potential to become permanent); National Family Farm Coalition
National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) unites and strengthens the work of its diverse grassroots member organizations to demand viable livelihoods for family farmers, fishermen and workers; safe and healthy food for all; and economically and environmentally sound rural communities. Founded in 1987, NFFC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization committed to fair prices and equitable access to credit, USDA programs and other essential resources for all, including minority, producers.
NFFC seeks a determined, committed and creative individual as Interim Policy Director to bring the concerns of NFFC member organizations to Capitol Hill and the Administration and to track family farm-related legislation, including the next Farm Bill. The candidate should have extensive knowledge of farm policy (or closely related issue) and Capitol Hill advocacy, as well as enthusiasm for and expertise in building membership capacity and alliances working for fair federal policies.
Position will be based at the NFFC office in Washington, DC; periodic travel is required.
Primary Job Functions
Advocate for a strong family farm and rural agenda in Washington, DC:
Support member organizations’ priorities on federal farm and fishery policy through direct and grassroots advocacy to Congress and federal agencies;
Facilitate training and travel for Coalition members making lobby visits to DC;
Coordinate and/or conduct research and analysis on the implications of federal legislation and budget appropriations on family farmers and fishermen;
Maintain regular communications with Coalition staff, membership and key allies, including actions and responses around policy advocacy;
Develop and maintain relationships with key allies and public officials.
Experience and Knowledge
3-5 years of public policy, legislative, communications, and/or grassroots organizing, including work with rural communities and in Washington, DC;
Existing relationships with key players at the federal level in family farm/fisheries, food and trade policies;
Demonstrated commitment to racial, social and economic justice with significant experience working with persons of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, sexual orientations, gender identities, ages and personalities;
Coordinating and nurturing geographically dispersed and culturally diverse coalitions, including leadership development;
Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
Professional attitude, strong ethics and willingness to learn and grow;
Social media platforms and MS Office (or similar) software.
Salary and Benefits
