Tenured / Tenure-Track Agricultural Law Position at Drake Law School



DRAKE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track position as Assistant/Associate/Professor of Law in the field of Agricultural Law and Director of the Drake Agricultural Law Center beginning in the fall of 2019. Applicants must hold a J.D. degree (or the equivalent) and should have outstanding records of accomplishment in scholarship, teaching, and service as well as substantial practice experience. 

The successful candidate will teach agricultural law courses and serve as the Director of the Drake Agricultural Law Center. Drake was the first American law school to offer a J.D. specialization in agricultural law, offering courses not only on agricultural and food law but also on agriculture’s effect on social, economic, and political systems.
The student-published Drake Journal of Agricultural Law has been a leading legal journal focused solely on these issues for more than 20 years.

Founded in 1983, the Agricultural Law Center provides opportunities for students to explore how the legal system impacts the global food system and the agricultural sector's ability to produce, market, and use agricultural products. Drake’s location in central Iowa places it at the heart of a state that leads in production of soybeans, corn, eggs, and pork.

SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS 
Tenure Track or Tenured Faculty Position 

The School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University invites applications for an Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor with a specialization in sustainable food systems. We seek candidates from the social sciences with a focused line of research on food system development and evolution. Applicant’s background should bridge the nexus of food, community development, and sustainability, and ideally would have an analytical background in social-ecological systems. We are particularly interested in candidates studying food systems within a U.S. context that possess mixed-methods research skills or systems modeling ability.  We are also interested in candidates who work across disciplines with a record of interdisciplinary collaboration. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an extramurally-supported research program. Candidates may be appointed at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Appointment at the full professor level may be possible for a candidate with an exceptional research record in the specified areas of expertise. 

This position is partially funded by Indiana University Bloomington’s Emerging Areas of Research initiative (http://ovpr.indiana.edu/ear1/ear1/), which underwrites the Sustainable Food Systems Science (SFSS) program. The SFSS team seeks to understand sustainable food system development by studying the leverage points used to build more resilient and sustainable food systems. The candidate will join a growing, interdisciplinary community of colleagues across the University, with opportunities for joining research projects in the United States (Indiana, New York, New Mexico), Brazil, Italy, Madagascar, Norway, and Zambia. The candidate will contribute to SPEA’s developing food systems research and curriculum.

Minimum educational qualifications include a Ph.D. in a related field (e.g., sociology, economics, community development, public policy and affairs, geography, anthropology) and evidence of a developed research program. The successful applicant is expected to start August 1, 2019, and to have completed the Ph.D. by that date. 

We are especially interested in applicants with a record of successful teaching and mentoring of students from all backgrounds (including first-generation college students, low-income students, racial and ethnic minorities, women, LGBTQ, etc.) and an interest in contributing to SPEA’s programs, curricular offerings, and research portfolio in ways that enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion; applicants are encouraged to address these topics in the letter of application.

Junior and Visiting Scholar - Environmental Law, Pace University

Call for Nominations for 2018 Haub Environmental Law Distinguished Junior Scholar and 2019 Haub Visiting Scholar


Pace Environmental Law at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University is seeking letters of interest and nominations for its annual Haub Environmental Law Distinguished Junior Scholar and Haub Environmental Visiting Scholar.

The Haub Environmental Law Distinguished Junior Scholar Award is presented annually to an emerging junior environmental law professor who exhibits scholarly excellence and promise at an early stage in his or her career. Pace Law invites the award recipient to present his or her recent scholarship to the Pace Law community.  Past Junior Scholars include Sharon Jacobs (Colorado), Michael Livermore (UVA), Sarah Light (The Wharton School at UPenn), Michael Pappas (Maryland), and Sarah Schindler (Maine).

The Haub Visiting Scholar will be a professional with a proven track record in environmental law, governance, policy, economics and/or science, who has worked in government, academia and/or the nonprofit sector.  The appointment is designed to provide time for reflection and productive work, as well as opportunities to engage with Pace Law students, faculty and staff.  The scholar will be provided a substantial stipend, housing and transportation for a month-long or semester residency.  The Scholar will conduct his or her residency in the spring of 2019 and will present at a major public event, give guest lectures in his or her area of expertise, and generate a publication related to his or her work in affiliation with Pace Law.  The Scholar will also be expected to meet with our environmental law students and attend program events, including an alumni reception.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is recruiting for Accreditation Managers to work in the National Organic Program (NOP). The selected candidates will serve as an Agricultural Marketing Specialist (Regulatory) --- otherwise called Accreditation Manager --- within the Accreditation and International Activities (AIA) Division of the National Organic Program. Examples of duties:
  • Carries out assignments covering a wide variety of day-to-day operations of the AIA Division.
  • Conducts quality system and regulatory compliance audits of accredited certifying agents and government accreditation bodies
  • Prepares and reviews audit reports, corrective actions, and adverse action notices as needed
  • Prepares documentation for review by the NOP Accreditation Committee and participates in Committee decisions
  • Assists in the development or revision of accreditation procedures
  • Assists in the preparation of training materials that explain the standards and accreditation processes

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is on the forefront of the movement to use food technology and markets to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, from climate change and global hunger to antibiotic resistance and the exploitation of billions of animals annually. GFI Campus Fellows will have a critical role in ensuring that a good food future happens as quickly and efficiently as possible. As a Campus Fellow, you will take on a dynamic leadership opportunity shaping discourse around the future of protein at your university and establish an in-depth network with leading entrepreneurs in the plant-based and clean meat, egg, and dairy industries.

How You Will Make a Difference
As a GFI Campus Fellow, your primary goal is to increase the number of students at your university that pursue entrepreneurship in plant-based and cellular agriculture alternatives to factory-farmed foods. To do this, you will build institutional support, identify allies, and plan events. Specific activities will include:
  • Networking with campus groups and coordinating to host GFI on campus for speaking events.
  • Working with industry contacts - including founders and CEOs at various plant-based and clean meat companies - to put on a panel event on campus.
  • Working with professors to host GFI for guest lectures.
  • Coordinating and attending meetings with key university contacts such as the heads of social entrepreneurship, innovation, sustainability, etc.   
  • Creating a publicity strategy for GFI events: working with the campus newspaper, campus organizations, and key stakeholders.
Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking smart, thoughtful, and creative self-starters who want to push back against climate change, transform industrial animal agriculture, and develop healthy and humane foods that are accessible to everyone.
