Regulatory Specialist II, Flavor Producer



Position Summary:


This position provides technical maintenance and support in product labeling, nutrition, allergen, and regulatory issues specific for Flavor Producers. The position provides broad-based labeling and nutrition guidance, ensures the technical accuracy of product labels, and develops and maintains appropriate records to meet corporate, government, and consumer expectations. Under the direction of Regulatory team leaders, this position is responsible for development and management of scientific substantiation and reports to support regulatory compliant use of Flavor Producers’ products domestically.


Responsibilities/Accountabilities:


Assists, with external and internal experts, and with other Flavor Producers’ team members to prepare scientific support documentation for internal and external customers. Works to apply FDA/USDA regulations and its standards and principles food science in close concert with the department manager and other appropriate resources. The compliance determination will include recipes (assure formulas and ingredients comply with government regulations and Flavor Producers’ policies), labeling (apply knowledge and experience of regulations and Flavor Producers’ policies affecting ingredient declarations, allergens, nutrition documents, and claims), and communication (apply relevant policies and procedures to sensitive communications such as advertising, promotional materials, websites, etc.)


Possess a refined attention-to-detail workstyle. A style that is organized and solution-based, and the data is in order. Maintaining complete product files to support government label compliance standards and technical advertising/promotional claims and accomplishing this goal through the development and maintenance of label, nutrition, and regulatory files per standards.


Act as a contributor to the innovation/renovation processes within Flavor Producers’ that seek solutions from a variety of ideas along the way to the preparation of new product launches. Facilitate in providing regulatory perspective for new and legacy products and help identify and resolve regulatory hurdles that arise from project or business goals.


Possess the ability to work with others and maintain a proactive approach to the business. This is the value brought to the role. As the ability to interpret the law and operate with successful independence gains ground, the position will grow into identification and implementation of opportunities for continuous improvement in all aspects of the department’s operation.


Other assigned responsibilities include but are not limited to participation in regularly scheduled meetings, creation of percent range breakouts, ERP system maintenance, and file maintenance.


Education and Experience:


  • Associate degree in Food, Biological, or Physical Sciences, or other closely related field required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • One or more years of experience in the food/flavor industry, primarily in regulatory affairs, regulatory compliance, or product development.

  • Exposure to working with and current knowledge of USDA/FDA/FSMA Regulations as they pertain to labeling, standards of identity, allergens, and food safety.

  • Familiarity working with and current understanding of nutrition, labeling, and regulatory concepts gained through technical reading, industry interaction, and/or attendance at appropriate seminars and educational courses.

  • Excellent verbal and written presentation skills to communicate to an audience ranging from peers to manager to executive team and to positively write and convey regulatory information reporting and compliance information.

  • Ability to identify problems, collect data, establish facts, forecast, and draw valid conclusions both mathematically and analytically.

  • General knowledge of food ingredients, interactions, and nutrition levels.

  • Assistance in interpreting FDA regulations and advising Marketing, Product Development, Sales, etc. on proposed claims and formulations, recommending changes to claims and formulations to bring them into compliance.

  • Effectively communicates consumer desires and needs and to transfer information to Marketing and Product Development through clear communication.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the pursuit of quality and organization in academic work and previous job situations.

  • Collects, organizes, and maintains an extensive variety of technical data and literature and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Ability to adhere to aggressive deadlines and work with minimal direct supervision.

  • Conduct work with initiative, persistence, and a sense of urgency.

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (exposure and familiarity to Sage ERP system a plus).

  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time for overnight travel.
