The National Agricultural Law Center, Division of Agriculture, University of Arkansas is seeking two new staff attorneys, with work focusing on Finance & Credit and on Food Law.

Finance & Credit Position:

The Staff Attorney will assist with research and writing activities that further the national mission of the National Agricultural Law Center, with a primary emphasis on agricultural finance and credit issues impacting the agricultural and food sectors. This includes relevant aspects of the Uniform Commercial Code (i.e., Article 9 and Article 2), agricultural liens (including statutory trusts under Packers and Stockyards Act and the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act), and bankruptcy/debt management. New Mexico Legal Aid - Agricultural Worker Program Staff Attorney

  • NMLAs Centro Legal Campesino provides free civil legal aid to agricultural workers throughout the state -- predominantly in the south and southeast. NMLA case priorities include wage theft, employment discrimination and harassment, workplace health and safety violations, civil rights abuses, and immigration relief for survivors of violence and human trafficking.
Duties:
  • The Staff Attorney will provide effective legal services to enforce agricultural workers rights. Advocacy tasks include:
    • Multi-faceted advocacy to support project initiatives (Wage Justice Agricultural Guest Workers, Workplace Health & Safety, Labor Trafficking)
    • Outreach in rural areas and at farmworker community centers across New Mexico and at the El Paso/Juarez border
    • Case development and litigation in federal and state courts for claims under the Agricultural Worker Protection Act and federal and state wage laws
    • Advice, counsel, and representation as appropriate for farmworkers before administrative agencies for wage theft and health and safety violations

National Farmer's Union - Government Relations Director

Description:

  • The Government Relations (GR) Director’s primary focus is to supervise and lead the GR team, lobby members of Congress, congressional staff and appropriate federal agencies. The GR Director will provide background research, draft policy documents and correspondence, and disseminate information to Congress, the administration and National Farmers Union members. This individual will represent National Farmers Union with outside organizations, coalitions, and the media.
Duties:
  • Supervise and lead the GR team on policy matters

Duties:
  • The New York Policy Associate’s duties and responsibilities will include:
    • Attending and participating in advocacy meetings including handling scheduling; assisting with preparation of materials, agenda, and presentations; notetaking during meetings; and supporting follow-up communications;
    • Coordinating event logistics for advocacy days, such as scheduling meetings, reserving event space, coordinating catering;
    • Organizing signatures from partner organizations for letters of support for key policies and programs;
    • Drafting emails and event invitations to key state leaders and lawmakers;

Office of Urban Agriculture - Program Analyst

  • This position is located in the newly formed Office of Urban Agriculture, within the Office of the Chief of Staff here at Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE). The Office of Urban Agriculture will serve as the District’s primary point of contact for encouraging and promoting urban, indoor, rooftop and other emerging agriculture practices to assist the District in reaching its Sustainable DC goal of putting an additional 20 acres of urban land in production by 2032.
Duties:

  • Serving as the operations and program manager, the incumbent will develop the legally mandated duties of the Office of Urban Agriculture, including implementing and expanding District-wide policies and programs to promote urban farming and agriculture, including the Urban Farming Land Lease Program (in partnership with the Department of General Services); the Tax Abatement Program (in partnership with the Office of Tax and Revenue), and the Beekeeping Program (in partnership with the DOEE Fisheries and Wildlife Division).
  • Collaborate with and provide guidance to other District agencies, offices, commissions, and councils implementing programs which impact urban agriculture production. Establishes relationships with growers, producers, urban agricultural actors, the DC Food Policy Council, the University Of DC College Of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to obtain policy and program recommendations.
  • Act as a liaison for agricultural producers in obtaining secure access and tenure to land for sustainable food production, tax incentives for agricultural production, infrastructure grants, loans, and incentives to expand operations. Assist urban agricultural growers with obtaining services needed for production, including required permits and licenses, water access, and electricity access.  Apply for and accepts agriculture grants on behalf of DOEE to expand agricultural operations and performs outreach to share best practices, provide mentorship, and offer technical assistance with urban agriculture programs.
Requirements:
  • Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, CS-12. 
  • Specialized experience includes; expert knowledge and experience in existing DC urban agriculture programs, initiatives, or operations. 
  • Knowledge of District laws, regulations, and policies governing urban agriculture operations, including growing, processing, and distribution. 
  • Expert knowledge of management and organizational principles and practices, planning, programming, and budgeting regulations, and guidelines to establish and operate short-term and long-term urban agriculture expansion programs, including tax abatement, land leases, and infrastructure grants and loans.

USDA - Agricultural Marketing Specialist

  • You will conduct regulatory compliance audits to verify compliance with United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA)organic regulations and applicable international standards. If selected, you will part of the organization that is responsible for the development, implementation, and administration of organic regulations in accordance with the Organic Food Production Act of 1990 (OFPA).
Duties:

  • The duties may include, but are not limited to: 
    • Receives, categorizes, processes and determines disposition of complaints regarding all elements of the National Organic Program (NOP).

    • Apply laws and regulations related to the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 and related regulations. 
    • Interpret USDA organic laws and regulations to develop and implement new approaches, methods, or procedures in data gathering and analysis techniques. 
    • Communicate with NOP-accredited certifiers to obtain information regarding organic food production, handling, or labeling. 
    • Manage multiple projects with competing deadlines to direct resources toward the area of highest risk, developing concrete milestones and ensuring timely resolution of regulatory issues resulting from surveillance or compliance cases. 
    • Obtain statements, document evidence, and write clear and compelling findings through reports and briefing memos.

Duties:

  • Primary responsibility is teaching undergraduate courses in agricultural education, agricultural communication and leadership, and preparing students for careers as certified teachers of agriculture. The candidate may also teach M.S. graduate courses, supervise graduate students, and advise departmental student organizations. The candidate will be expected to develop a high-quality research program that includes grant writing and publishing within the discipline. Additional responsibilities include participating in appropriate professional and university service.
Requirements:

  • Candidates must have a doctorate in agricultural education, agricultural communications, or a closely related area by May 15, 2021. High school teaching experience is desirable but not required. Candidates must be able to demonstrate oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position, as mandated by state law.
