Earthjustice - Staff Attorney - FL

STAFF ATTORNEY, CLEAN ENERGY FLORIDA

Florida Regional  Miami or Tallahassee, Florida

Earthjustice is seeking an experienced Staff Attorney to join its Florida Regional Office with a focus on clean energy work.  The attorney will litigate before the Florida Public Service Commission and in the courts to ensure reforms that support a transition to clean, affordable, and reliable energy infrastructure, and that avoid unreasonable subsidization of coal-fired generation.
Earthjustice is the premier nonprofit environmental law organization.  We take on the biggest, most precedent-setting cases across the country.  We wield the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people’s health; to preserve magnificent places and wildlife; to advance clean energy; and to combat climate change.  We partner with thousands of groups, supporters, individuals and communities to engage the critical environmental issues of our time and bring about positive change.  We are here because the earth needs a good lawyer.
Founded in 1971, Earthjustice has a distinguished track record of achieving significant, lasting environmental protections.  We achieve this by hiring those who share a passion for justice and a healthy environment.  Our headquarters are in San Francisco with thirteen offices across the U.S., including the Florida Regional Office with locations in Miami and Tallahassee.
Earthjustice has a longstanding track record of success with our litigation and advocacy to reduce dependence on dirty fossil fuels and increase reliance on clean energy resources, including energy efficiency, solar, wind, demand response, and storage. We see an unparalleled opportunity to hasten a shift away from fossil fuels; achieve major, enduring reductions in carbon pollution; and secure a cleaner, smarter, more equitable electric grid.  The Staff Attorney position will be part of our increased effort to advocate for policies and infrastructure that supports a swift transition to a modern sustainable energy system.  In this role, the Staff Attorney will work to secure and defend rule reforms that eliminate market barriers to clean energy, and to challenge ill-conceived rules that subsidize coal generation and/or threaten to shut clean energy out of the markets.
This position will be based in our Florida Office (either Miami or Tallahassee), which you can learn more about by clicking here.  The Staff Attorney will work closely with our Clean Energy Program, which you can learn about here, and our Coal Program, which you can learn about here.  The Staff Attorney will also collaborate with Florida Regional staff on the office’s other environmental litigation as needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead complex litigation with a focus on clean energy.
  • Help expand our outreach to and partnerships with community-based groups interested in energy litigation and other advocacy.

  • Collaborate in team problem solving, litigation strategy, project management and trial work.
  • Supervise the work of more junior lawyers, interns and litigation assistants.
  • Manage relationships with outside co-counsel, clients and coalition partners.
  • Integrate communications and legislative advocacy into litigation and other legal strategies.
  • Support efforts to ensure a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.

Qualifications:

  • Lawyer who is admitted, or willing to apply for admission, to the Florida bar.
  • At least six years of litigation experience, preferably including experience in energy law.
  • A commitment to public interest work and a passion for Earthjustice’s mission.
  • Proven research, analysis, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others.
