Food & Water Watch Communications Assistant

Communications Assistant

Food & Water Watch is a nonprofit consumer organization that works to ensure the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainably produced. We are seeking a dynamic, media-savvy, detail-oriented Communications Assistant interested in learning the nuts and bolts of nonprofit advocacy communications. We are looking for someone with strong writing and communications skills, but who can also perform complex administrative tasks with consummate attention to detail. This position works with the entire communications team and reports to the Communications Director.

Specific Responsibilities

This position will assist the team in administrative duties, media monitoring and reporting, pitching the press, monitoring and engaging in social media, and light web work as needed. Specific duties include:

  • Monitoring and tracking media clips
  • Assembling and making copies of media clips on a regular basis
  • Drafting media reports
  • Assisting with pitching stories to media
  • Using PR software, web research, media clips and other means to compile and maintain press lists
  • Preparing media kits
  • Assisting in press conference and event planning
  • Organizing outreach files digitally and in hard copy
  • Assisting with web work and website updates, as needed
  • Monitoring and engaging in social media as needed
  • Assisting with publication development, as needed
  • Data entry
  • Providing overall administrative support to Communications team
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; previous communications experience or internships strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated interest in food and water issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and verbal skills are required.
  • Ability to work well with a wide range of people, under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with close attention to detail.
  • Good computer skills are required, including familiarity with database and spreadsheet programs.
  • Video, blogging or podcasting experience a plus.
  • Strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of Food & Water Watch.
