The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is an alliance of grassroots organizations that advocates for federal policy reform to advance the sustainability of agriculture, food systems, natural resources, and rural communities. Position Description
 
NSAC’s Policy Specialist will help to:
 
  • Develop and implement policies and strategies focused on farm opportunities and fair competition, especially as these relate to increasing access to crop insurance for sustainable and organic farmers, promoting sensible commodity and crop insurance subsidy reform, reforming crop and revenue insurance to promote conservation, ensuring fair and competitive markets, and generally supporting thriving family farms through these and other related policy areas
  • Support sustainable food and agricultural system research by working on policy and funding for one or more USDA research programs, working closely with NSAC’s lead Policy Specialist on research and extension issues

This internship requires a graduate student with interest and skills related to agriculture and local food

production. Student should also have ability to assist in research and data collection and marketing of

the foods, produced by the organization to promote health and wellness in the Ponca Tribe community.

This internship will focus on building the local food production through the community garden and

livestock. The intern will assist in the day-to-day care of the gardens and livestock, as well as to collect

and record data on production of certain parts of the crop. The intern will also help lead a team of four

to five other garden workers. In addition, the intern would be responsible to help create a marketing

strategy for the produce. The internship will be a minimum of 240 hours with approximately 40 hours

per week, and the stipend payment will be $2,400 (the internship could extend to 500 hours). Intern

would need to live in or near White Eagle Health center. Housing will be provided for an out-of-town intern.


Main Objectives and Outcomes:

1) Oversee daily work in the garden

2) Help care for livestock

3) Collect data about the production of certain plants and help report findings to Oklahoma State

University

4) Assist in the care of poultry, especially by tracking egg production and how to increase

production

5) Help to market garden produce and eggs to the surrounding communities and businesses

6) Assist in logo design and branding strategy

As a participant in the Ogallala Commons Community Internship Program, interns will also meet the

following requirements (non-stipend time)

• With the internship supervisor, craft a Work Plan.

• Attend an Orientation.

• Create and publish 5 Internet blog posts with 10 photos during the internship period.

• Conduct an “Explore Your Community” exercise.

• Do 10 hours of Community Service during the internship.

• Prepare an Internship Portfolio (via PowerPoint) and present it at a Harvesting Ceremony.

• Complete an Evaluation of the internship, as well as receive an evaluation from the supervisor.

SUMMARY: CUESA is seeking an experienced, dynamic, articulate, sensible, visionary, consensus-building leader to manage the organization and shepherd it into the next stage of development. The Executive Director functions as the Chief Executive Officer of CUESA. In this capacity, the incumbent is responsible for implementing policies and deliverables set by the Board of Directors, leading the organization to achieve annual goals and objectives, and overseeing the financial, program development, human resource, fundraising, and administrative management of the organization. Job Description

Farmworker Legal Services, (FLS), a statewide division of Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM), is seeking applicants for a Staff Attorney position in our Kalamazoo office.   Kalamazoo is a college town in southwestern Michigan, located 35 miles east of Lake Michigan, and two hours from Chicago and Detroit.

LSSCM is a non-profit law firm providing free legal services to very low income and senior persons in 13 counties in south central Michigan.  FLS is the division of LSSCM that provides legal advice, referrals, direct representation and systemic advocacy to Michigan’s migrant and seasonal agricultural workers, as further described at www.FarmworkerLaw.org.

FLS has four attorneys, one legal assistant, and numerous seasonal interns and outreach staff.  Our bilingual advocates provide a full range of civil legal services to Michigan’s eligible population of 95,000 migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their dependents.  Michigan’s migrant workers harvest a diversity of crops, including asparagus, strawberries, blueberries, cucumbers, cherries and apples.  The majority of workers include Spanish-speaking family groups from the southern U.S. and Mexico.  Case priorities address their critical legal needs in employment, civil rights, housing, public benefits, and immigration law.  Because FLS is recognized as “the law office of first resort” for farmworkers in Michigan, services we provide include basic legal advice, community education and referrals, and direct representation of individuals and groups in the full spectrum of local, state, and federal forums.

The Staff Attorney will provide effective legal services to enforce farmworkers’ rights.  Advocacy tasks will include field investigation and camp outreach, legal research and writing, negotiation, community task force participation, training, document preparation, policy analysis, and direct representation in administrative hearings, as well as state and federal litigation and appeals.

Qualifications

Applicants must be able to communicate effectively in Spanish, as most of our clients speak Spanish as their primary language.  Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Michigan, qualified to be admitted by waiver, or able to take the next available bar exam.  Applicants must possess excellent communication, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of workers, immigrants or other persons in poverty.  Third-year law students will be considered.

Salary

Responsibilities:
  • Provides legal service to low income farmworker clients and client groups including advice, negotiation, litigation and administrative advocacy in accordance with program priorities and case handling policies.
  • Reviews and supervises the work product of Community Workers and Clerical support staff relating to all clients being advised or represented by him/her.
  • Undertakes significant statewide impact activity, including institutional and group litigation or community economic development beneficial to the low income community.
  • Develops leadership in working with community, client and other advocacy groups related to statewide impact issues.
  • Works to develop specialized knowledge in a substantive area of poverty law and act as a resource for other staff through participation in at least one CRLA task force.
  • Coordinates advocacy in substantive areas through collaboration with other human services providers, non-profit organizations and community, client or other advocacy groups.

Duties and Responsibilities (including Supervisory):
Manage warehouse, goods and food program staff. Oversee the distribution network of bulk food, prepared food, and fresh produce to member agencies. Ensure contract compliance, proper reporting, and record keeping for all food and goods. Procurement of free and purchased foods. Ensure kashruth of all food. Coordinate relations with government groups, food distributors, vendors, and member agencies. Ensure maintenance of all equipment including van, trucks, hi-lo's, jacks, etc. Serves as liason between kosher agencies and the Food Bank of New York City, City Harvest and governmental agencies such as NYS DOH and NYC HRA. Consultant to all kosher agencies regarding available kosher foods in Feeding America and governmental programs.

Maintain Met Council's anti-hunger program that delivers food to JCC's and clients in a timely manner; compliance with health and safety requirements regarding food handling; compliance with kashrut requirements; meeting contract deliverables; growing Food Program to extent funding and operational efficiencies permit.

  • Develops and revises regulations and guidance, advising on compliance with FDA's Good Guidance Practice regulations and other legal/regulatory issues.
  • Reviews and drafts policy proposals and decisions.
  • Performs legal/regulatory reviews of petitions raising issues with industry-wide effect.
  • Provides technical guidance on procedures and methods involved in implementing new programs, guidance, and regulations.
  • Informs management and staff on new or revised regulations, internal policies and procedures, and trends in the pharmaceutical and health care industry.
  • Ensures legal/regulatory sufficiency of action packages for regulatory enforcement actions.
  • Makes presentations at national and international conferences and professional meetings regarding applicable regulations and policies.

GS-14: At least one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service that included analyzing, evaluating, and developing statutes and regulations affecting technical regulatory and compliance programs for drugs; consulting management and staff on developing and implementing compliance policy and strategic enforcement initiatives for legal/regulatory matters under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA), such as responding to and/or enforcing FDCA warning letters; and directing the legal/regulatory review of an organization's policies and practices.

Experience in applying the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act must be clearly reflected in your CV and/or resume.
