CAFS Mission
The mission of Center for Agriculture and Food Systems (CAFS) is to train the next generation of sustainable food and agriculture law and policy advocates and entrepreneurs, and to collaborate with local, regional, national and international partners to create and disseminate innovative legal tools that food system stakeholders –- including farmers, food entrepreneurs, consumers and advocates -- can leverage to drive their market and policy initiatives forward.

Program Officer Duties
The Program Officer (PO) is one of the core CAFS’ team members. As such, the PO has a dynamic role with high degree of responsibility, autonomy, and works on a wide range of duties.

The PO is responsible, as assigned, for leadership on all aspects of complex projects. In terms of securing and administering projects, the PO will work on fund-development (i.e. researching potential funding, contacting/gathering information from potential donors, etc.), assisting OIA office with grant- writing, and grant/project administration and budget tracking. In terms of executing projects, the PO is responsible for conducting research; drafting reports, memoranda, and white papers; directing student research associates; developing web components; designing information products; and interfacing with project/design contractors. In terms of promoting CAFS’ projects, the PO coordinates with other team members on CAFS’ media and outreach, and the PO is responsible for generating CAFS’ monthly electronic newsletter. The PO may manage several projects (at varying stages and levels of complexity) at once.

Many of CAFS’ projects are executed through CAFS’ Food & Agriculture Clinic. In that regard, the PO will often be providing direct support to CAFS’ clinical lead, and will work with the clinical lead and students on CAFS’/ clinic projects. The PO may also receive direct project assignments from the
Director.

The PO will also represent CAFS at fundraisers, policy events and meetings; speak at conferences; and represent CAFS in various working groups. Finally, the PO will participate in planning and strategy for CAFS, take part in staff meetings and other administrative duties as assigned.

This position is grant funded and as such is a one (1) year assignment.
Renewal of this opportunity is dependent upon future grant funding and performance. Salary is in the low $40's.

Qualifications:

A minimum of 3 yrs of relevant experience is required.
A graduate degree is preferred, or an equivalent combination of work experience and education.
Demonstrated passion for food and agricultural issues required.
Strong computer skills (e.g. proficient in Microsoft suite, skilled with social media; knowledge of InfoGraphics a plus).
Solid writing and research skills, plus experience with public speaking required.

The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) is seeking a Program Officer for its Food Communities & Public Health (FCPH) Program. The program includes multiple projects involving the provision of technical assistance and working in close collaboration with organizational partners. In addition, the program builds upon strong relationships with a range of partners in the NGO, public health, community-based organization, and academic communities to improve food environments, increase access to healthy food, and inform food and nutrition policy. The primary role for this position is to lead CLF’s ongoing technical assistance and science advisory role with the national Meatless Monday (MM) Campaign, a non-profit public health initiative of the Monday Campaigns. As a core member of the FCPH program team, the FCPH Program Officer also plays a key role in implementing other projects and Center-wide activities as needed. The position includes multiple responsibilities requiring project management skills, technical expertise in public health, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.

Specific examples of these responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Lead and/or manage a full range of technical assistance activities in accordance with CLF’s defined role with the MM Campaign, including: research and evaluation activities, communication of science, public health advocacy, and educational outreach.

Serve as CLF’s primary liaison with the Healthy Monday Program within the Bloomberg School’s Department of Health, Behavior and Society.

Lead activities to strengthen the scope of involvement and commitment to the MM campaign at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins University in general (e.g. MM in cafeterias, symposia, events, etc.).

Represent CLF in maintaining an ongoing consultative, collaborative, and advisory relationship with colleagues at the MM Campaign.

Work closely with the MM Campaign in developing strategies for campaign expansion within new arenas (e.g., international organizations, international health agencies, public health associations, federal and state agencies, and/or community organizations, etc.).

Lead efforts to harness expertise available within CLF and throughout JHU to address technical assistance requests of the MM Campaign and to implement project work plans supporting clear objectives that are in line with the goals of the MM campaign.

Provide technical expertise re. nutritional science, food system, and public health research in order to inform MM campaign (and other partner organizations’) work-planning, communication materials development, outreach activities, etc.

Represent CLF and the MM Campaign in appropriate professional and community settings. Representing CLF, speak with media representatives about the MM Campaign and the public health implications of meat production and consumption.

Work closely with the FCPH Program Director, serving as their deputy in coordinating program-wide activities.

Work closely with CLF’s communications and public affairs teams to produce needed science translation materials and social media products.

Speak publicly at key events, including conferences and guest lecturing in classes at JHU and other academic institutions.

Coordinate and participate in research projects as appropriate, including design and implementation, and the oversight of data collection and analysis.

Supervise FCPH program staff as well as undergraduate and graduate research assistant activities at CLF.

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Public Health, Nutrition, or related field. Five years of relevant experience required working within an academic environment and/or university system. Demonstrated supervisory or lead responsibilities. Requires excellent organizational, writing, public speaking, and networking skills.

Will possess strong technical expertise and program management experience in one or more of the following areas: public health, food systems, human nutrition, behavior change communication, and health education and promotion. Must be organized, efficient, and detail-oriented with ability to multi-task and be flexible.

Independent, self-motivated learner and worker who also functions well in a team setting. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, & Power Point. Experience working with grassroots organizations, corporations, public relations agencies, and/or public policy decision-makers; with food and/or diet-related industries/issues/campaigns.

Will possess experience conducting advocacy activities, demonstrate a collaborative approach to work, are excellent communicators, demonstrate a strong capacity for initiative, recognize the value of rigorous analysis, enjoy problem solving and leading program work in both established and emerging areas. ABOUT THE POSITION:

CFS currently seeks a Research, Policy & Administrative Intern to join the newly formed Honolulu office. During the upcoming year, CFS’s work in Hawaii will focus on legal action, policy education, and grassroots coordination.  The intern will be supervised by the Hawaii Program Director and will work closely with the Community Organizing and Outreach Coordinator to assist with legislative and grassroots campaigns. The intern should have a background in research, familiarity with food sustainability issues in Hawaii, and be comfortable taking on multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Along with research and policy projects, the intern will also assist with general office administrative duties.

Organize planning and logistics for operation of multi-farmer Food Hub, including a 450-share Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, providing fresh, locally-grown produce to customers around the Merrimack Valley and Boston area. Plan multiple strategies and provide logistical operations for providing over $30K of produce to low-income residents around the Boston area. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Coordinate New Entry’s World PEAS Food Hub
• Work with Program and Finance Coordinator to continuously monitor progress in reaching goals of World PEAS Food Hub sustainability plan and document outcomes
• Assist farmers in developing individual farmer production schedules
• Develop and conduct outreach and education programs to reach potential individual customers and institutional markets.
• Manage shareholder communications and customer service

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s Degree required, 5 years of experience overseeing CSA operations may substitute for degree. Master’s Degree preferred.  Prior experience in supervising/ managing a produce operation or agricultural business is essential. Agricultural training and experience in multiple aspects of farming is a plus.
• Experience in building relationships and educating consumers
• Community organizing and cross-cultural experience helpful; prepared to build relationships with beginning, immigrant and refugee farmer participants.
• Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience required.
