Director of Child Nutrition Policy & Programs: Hunger Free New York City

Hunger Free New York City (HFNYC) is seeking a full-time Director of Child Nutrition Policy and Programs to support its work to ensure that every child in New York City and America has access to sufficient, nutritious food. By increasing participation in federal child nutrition assistance programs, including school meals, the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), and Women, Infants, Children (WIC) program, we connect kids with the food they need to grow and thrive. The Director of Child Nutrition Policy and Programs will work with Hunger Free America (HFA) and Hunger Free NYC staff and community partners - utilizing advocacy, outreach, communications, and volunteerism - to promote child nutrition programs and services locally and nationally. This position is based in New York City and reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director of Child Nutrition Policy and Programs will:

• Direct the organization’s policy, outreach, technical assistance, volunteerism, and research work on child nutrition programs, with a particular focus on the National School Breakfast Program (NSBP), SFSP, and WIC.
• Direct HFNYC’s Summer Meals Outreach Program, including managing a team of AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates and interns in community outreach, to increase participation in SFSP in NYC.
• Develop and maintain positive working relationships with local, state, and federal child nutrition program administrators and keep abreast of program rules and regulations, policy guidance, and other issues regarding child nutrition programs.
• Monitor major child nutrition policy developments; collaborate with the Policy and Communications Departments to respond, when appropriate.
• Serve as NYCCAH’s main liaison with local, state, and federal officials, as well as local, state, and national nonprofit organizations and stakeholders, regarding child nutrition programs.
• Provide technical assistance to NSBP, SFSP, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), and WIC sites to advance best practices that increase access and utilization of these programs; develop reports on best practices and challenges in those programs.
• Collaborate with HFA’s Strategic Volunteerism Department to recruit and manage volunteers for outreach and other service opportunities with SFSP, WIC, and other child nutrition programs.
• Collaborate cross-departmentally to provide education, training, and technical assistance to national service participants and other partner organizations to increase their ability to conduct and coordinate child nutrition program outreach and volunteerism.
• Collaborate with the Development Department to prepare proposals, progress reports, and other materials for funders.
• Prepare draft materials – e.g. public testimony, grant proposals, fact sheets, press releases, outreach materials – for the media, funders, elected officials, partner organizations, and the public.
• Create and update sections on the Hunger Free America website regarding child nutrition programs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

• A Bachelor’s Degree with at least 4-5 years of related experience. A Master’s Degree in social work, public health, nutrition, public administration, public policy, non-profit management, or a related field is a plus.
• Experience working at either a nonprofit organization or a government agency on outreach and/or policy work relating to child nutrition and/or federal safety net programs.
• Demonstrated success in developing and managing child nutrition and/or related programs.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise staff, national service members, interns, and volunteers.
• Knowledge of federal child nutrition programs and the NYC school system, including SchoolFood.
• Experience providing training and technical assistance to non-profit organizations.
• Excellent writing, communication, research, and analysis skills.
• Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and relationship-building skills.
• Demonstrated organizational and management skills, with proven ability to multi-task effectively.
• Positive, self-starter attitude; ability to take initiative, think creatively, and work independently.
• Demonstrated experience in community engagement, including working in diverse neighborhoods and with people from diverse backgrounds.
