The International Affairs, Food Assistance, and Farm and Rural Programs Division is responsible for the legal advice for the activities supervised by the Under Secretaries for Rural Development; Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services; and Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services, and some programs under the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC). This division works on a wide variety of programs including: the National School Lunch Program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Foreign Agricultural Service International Trade and Donation Programs, the Federal Crop Insurance Program, the CCC Commodity Programs, and various loan, guaranteed loan and grant programs for Farm Service Agency, Rural Housing Service, Rural Business-Cooperative Service, and Rural Utilities Service.
The duties of the Supervisory General Attorney are:
- Assisting in supervising diverse teams of attorneys and professional staff providing legal support to the Food and Nutrition Service
- Conducting and/or supervising legal research and writing; draft and/or review legislation, regulations, and other documents of legal significance; as a reviewer, provide clear and accurate feedback to drafters
- Supervising and training staff attorneys in conducting administrative litigation; manage the administrative litigation workload including case assignments, litigation strategy, and comprehensive reviews
- Interacting with other government agencies, Congressional staffs, law firms, corporate and nonprofit officials, and other external stakeholders in support of client agency programs
