The Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA) is a membership based, social
justice minded nonprofit organization that works with Hmong American farmers
in the Twin Cities and the surrounding metropolitan area. The mission of the
organization is to advance the economic, social and cultural prosperity of
these farmers and their families. Many Hmong farmers face numerous obstacles
to farming, including lack of access to land, capital, training and
alternative markets besides the farmers’ markets. Through cooperative farming,
education and advocacy, HAFA works with Hmong farmers to create a path to
wealth creation, not just income generation. HAFA was started by and is led by
Hmong American farmers and uses an organizing approach to do its work.

HAFA is hiring a Food Hub Director to lead HAFA’s Alternative Markets Program.
The Food Hub Director will report to the Executive Director and supervise
junior staff in the Alternative Markets Program. The position will also draft,
develop and manage an enterprise budget; develop and manage relationships with
institutional partners and launch and grow the volunteer program. The position
will be stationed half of the year at the Lafond office in Saint Paul and the
other half at the HAFA Farm, a 155 acre incubator and research vegetable farm
located in Vermillion Township, Minnesota just 20 minutes outside of Saint
Paul.

The ideal candidate should be highly motivated, organized, and outgoing with
excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. The candidate
must also be willing to perform physical labor and work outside or in the
fields. He or she must be detail oriented, mature, possess good judgment and
be willing to work hard and long hours. HAFA operates in a fast paced manner
and the ideal candidate must be able to solve problems quickly, work alongside
other senior and junior staff members, while working independently and under
tight deadlines. Because the Alternative Markets Program is critical for
farmers’ annual earnings, the ideal candidate must also possess good
interpersonal cultural skills and be committed to excellent, high quality
work. He or she must have experience with farming, food or community
development work and be knowledgeable of Microsoft and other office farm
related software programs such as Farmigo, Veggie Compass, Local Harvest,
Delivery Biz Pro etc.. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Ability
to fluently speak Hmong and familiarity with Hmong culture and customs is
critical. HAFA is especially interested in candidates who have worked on farms
or in farmers markets and with diverse communities.

Responsibilities
•       Develop, sustain and grow HAFA’s Alternative Markets Program and
specifically the Food Hub operation;
•       Hire, terminate and supervise staff and seasonal workers associated
with the program;
•       Develop and monitor the budget of the AMP program and the food hub and
monitor all the financing associated with the Food Hub;
•       Manage and lead annual audits and mock recalls related to the program;
•       Support HAFA’s development staff and executive team in the raising of
funds to support the program and Food Hub;
•       Monitor and collect relevant data for reporting and evaluation
purposes;
•       Develop, secure and maintain relationships with all the AMP
stakeholders including buyers, farmers, customers and organizational allies;
•       Work in the packing shed and provide aggregation and distribution
services on behalf of Hmong farmers to consumer through the HAFA CSA, as well
as to retail, commercial and institutional buyers, e.g., hospitals, schools,
grocery stores, buying clubs, etc.;
•       Manage HAFA online purchasing portal;
•       Supervise the operations, logistics and quality assurance sides of the
Food Hub;
•       Supervise dry & cold food storage operations and food safety
procedures;
•       Develop and supervise newsletters & other marketing materials for
buyers and producers;
•       Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers and interns;
•       Support and monitor farmers’ learnings  on food safety trainings and
all proper licenses and food safety procedures;
•       Evaluate and write reports showcasing program effectiveness.

they manage multiple tasks/projects;
•       Experience in managing and creating relationships with multiple
partners, patrons, and members;

attitude, flexibility, and teamwork;
•       Excellent verbal, written, communication and customer service skills;
•       Ability to develop, implement, nurture and evaluate projects;
•       Skills in web management and other computer & online programs;
•       Passion for building the capacity and wealth of Hmong farmers and
their family members;
•       A Food Hub Management Certification is highly recommended.

About the Agency

The Agriculture and Food Supply Section in the Resources, Science and Industry Division (RSI) of the Congressional Research Service (CRS) is seeking an Analyst in Agricultural Policy. The analyst will conduct analyses that inform congressional deliberations on agricultural trade policy. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the economics, history, trends, and current status of agricultural policy with an emphasis on agricultural trade, trade agreements, and export promotion and credit programs, as well as international frameworks governing agricultural trade and associated legislative, economic, and regulatory issues and interrelationships with other key agricultural policy areas.

This position requires the ability to utilize analytical methods and techniques to analyze policy issues for the U.S. Congress. Applicants should be comfortable with quantitative approaches in research and familiar with agricultural policy issues with an emphasis on agricultural trade, trade agreements, and export promotion and credit programs. Strong writing and presentation skills, including the ability to synthesize complex analyses into easy-to-understand language for a non-technical audience, are required.

Analyst duties include preparing objective, non-partisan analytical studies and descriptive background reports on issues of national significance; providing personal consultation and assistance to congressional committees, Members, and staff on public policy issues throughout the legislative process; and participating in or leading team research projects and seminars. The employee is also expected to develop over time the skills necessary to provide public policy and legislative analysis and consultation to congressional committees, Members, and staff at increasingly sophisticated levels. CRS works exclusively for the United States Congress, providing policy and legal analysis to committees and Members of both the House and Senate, regardless of party affiliation. The position of New York State Deputy Director offers an exciting opportunity to help shape and carry out the strategic agenda of a growing, forward-looking conservation organization. The Deputy Director will work with AFT staff, consultants and external partners to provide strategic leadership and management for American Farmland Trust's programs in New York.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Deputy Director will be based in the organization's New York State Office in Saratoga Springs and expected to travel throughout the state.  Primary responsibilities will include:

Programs:
*Works with the State Director and other AFT staff to develop and lead programs to advance AFT's mission - including Protecting Farmland, Promoting Sound Farming Practices and Keeping Farmers on the Land.
*Provides primary leadership for AFT's programs to aid beginning farmers in securing access to land, and transferring farms to the next generation in the Hudson Valley and other regions of New York.
*Builds and manages relationships with external stakeholders including agriculture, food and public health, environment, economic development and other constituencies.
*Promotes AFT and the organization's work through diverse communication's strategies; in coordination with Regional and National Staff.

Fundraising:
*Plays a leadership role in fundraising for AFT in New York including coordination with National Staff regarding individual and institutional fundraising strategy, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
*Fosters an impactful role and meaningful relationship with AFT's New York Council in advancing the organization's mission;

Management and Administration:
*Works with National Staff to coordinate the achievement of stated outcomes in alignment with national strategic goals and outcomes.
*Supervises and supports a diverse team of AFT staff and consultants;
*Manages project budgets, financial statements and reports;
*Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
The New York State Deputy Director must be outgoing and energetic and have direct professional experience working with diverse constituencies, such as farmers, landowners, public officials, agricultural, public health, economic development and conservation organizations, academic institutions and land trusts.  The individual must have knowledge of farmland conservation, access and transfer methods, local food economy development, and/or natural resources conservation techniques, preferably as applied within New York.  In particular, skills and experience in programs aimed at bringing a new generation of farmers on to the land will be highly important.

The Deputy Director must be entrepreneurial, self-motivated, a good people manager and appropriately out-going.  The successful candidate will have work experience in developing program concepts as well as creating and executing effective fundraising strategies.  Excellent communication skills (public presentation, phone, writing, partner relations) and creativity are essential.  Facility with the Microsoft Office is required - additional computer skills preferred.

*A BA or BS degree and a minimum of 7 years of related work experience in public policy, planning, agriculture, land conservation or natural resource planning.  Or, 5 years of related work experience with an advanced degree in one or more of the disciplines noted.
*Understanding of effective fundraising with individual and institutional funding partners.
*Previous experience with supervising staff and consultants, including from remote locations, is beneficial.
*Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating projects and budgets.
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
*Demonstrated experience with public policy initiatives is preferred.

The Food Group (TFG) is a local nonprofit focused on advancing healthy food
access. Established in 1976, they provide nutritious food and support services
to over 240 hunger relief partners and food distribution locations.

In April 2017, Minnesota Food Association/Big River Farms (MFA) became a
program of TFG. By combining two important components of the food system that
have mostly been separate, this partnership is on the cutting edge of
community work. Our newly joined efforts will focus on breaking down the
barriers that exist for sustainable farmers to grow good food locally while
also fighting the barriers that exist to getting good food to those who need

Honoring the seminal academic and humanitarian work of Thomas J. Marchione, this award is given to an MA, MS or Ph.D. student whose active engagement in food security and food sovereignty issues continues and expands Dr. Marchione’s efforts toward food justice, food access, and food as a human right. The award can be in recognition of exemplary work completed or in progress, or for proposed work in the field of food as a human right and the social justice aspects of food systems.
Ideally, the recipient will be working towards, in Dr. Marchione’s words, “the best and more sustainable approaches to fulfill the right to food.” There will be one annual award of $750 (this will include a 1 year student membership to the American Anthropological Association and the Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition). The award may be for proposed or in-process research or a research prize for completed work.

Eligibility: Open to Masters and Doctoral level students who will have completed their coursework and research proposal by the time of the annual American Anthropological Association meeting in the discipline of anthropology or allied fields (e.g. sociology, food studies, nutrition, etc.). Students already engaged in relevant research, action or advocacy may apply in acknowledgement of their accomplishments. Proposals must be focused on migrant and/or refugee communities in the United States or on developing world countries.

Senior Associate in Policy for the Safe Food Project, Pew Charitable Trusts

Project Overview Pew's Safe Food Project seeks to modernize and strengthen federal government oversight of meat and poultry safety in order to better protect public health and undertake additional initiatives to reduce foodborne illness. Position Overview The Senior Associate, based in Pew's Washington, D.C., office, will inform and influence public policy by providing research and programmatic support to achieve the goals of the project. This will include expanding subject matter expertise in food safety law and policy, in particular oversight of meat and poultry as well as law and policy related to public health; participating in the execution of the project's research and outreach goals; drafting legislative language and supporting materials concerning safety oversight of meat and poultry production and assisting with convening meetings and stakeholder communications.

Reporting to the Project Director, the Senior Associate will also work with Pew colleagues in communications, research, government relations, human resources, and other areas. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.

Under the direction of the Project Director and guidance of other staff, contribute to policy advocacy and outreach efforts:

- Play a major role in developing strategies to modernize safety oversight of meat and poultry and in participating in the project's activities related to the coalition advocating for meat and poultry modernization legislation.

- Assist in planning, organizing, and coordinating in-person and online convenings of advocacy groups, policy makers and other key audiences, including meetings hosted or sponsored by Pew and briefings on Capitol Hill.

- Collaborate with the communications and government relations teams to generate materials and presentations for outreach to the media, policymakers, and key stakeholders related to food safety and ensure that materials are timely, accurate, and relevant.

- Communicate with and cultivate relationships between Pew and key stakeholders, including scientific and medical professional societies; state and federal legislative, regulatory, and public health officials and policy makers; agricultural producers; food retailers; advocacy groups; members of the public; and other domestic and international stakeholders. Under the direction of the Project Director and guidance of others:

- Expand on an already-existing knowledge of issues related to food safety law and policy, particularly as it relates to meat and poultry.

- Proactively identify, monitor and influence the positions of key stakeholders and thought leaders on meat and poultry safety issues. Under the direction of the Project Director and guidance of other staff, contribute to research and publication efforts:

- Define and research key policy issues related to oversight of meat and poultry production and to public health that will support the project's legislative and/or policy goals.

- Draft documents related to project and, review and edit reports and other documents from staff, consultants and/or stakeholders.

- Contribute to and participate in broader Trusts-related projects and activities as requested.

- A bachelor's degree in a research or policy-related discipline required. Professional or advanced degree in law, public policy, or research-related field preferred.

- Minimum of four years directly related professional experience in public policy or research.

- Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.

- Knowledge of animal agriculture and food safety laws and policies.

- Excellent applied research and analytical skills, including a proven ability to comprehend scientific research, synthesize large amounts of scientific information, identify themes, and present the information to an informed general audience.

- Ability to focus quickly on the essence of an issue, as well as to identify, understand, and synthesize different policy perspectives.

- Excellent oral and written skills, including an ease in communicating complex concepts and issues in a clear, effective manner for policy and general audiences.

- Demonstrated project- and time-management skills, including the ability to think strategically, juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, resolve problems creatively and logically, organize time efficiently and remain attentive to details.

- Ability to work professionally and collegiality within a creative, fast-paced corporate culture that emphasizes excellence and teamwork.
