CORE DUTIES OF EXTENSION FACULTY

The core duties of MU Extension faculty are to Educate, Create, and Connect. The emphasis among these duties and specific deliverables will vary for different appointments and evolve from year to year, direction for which is developed in an annual plan of work for the program area and for the individual.

• Educate . Extension Faculty deliver onsite Extension teaching and programming, online courses, continuing education, technical assistance, consultation, and other educational methods and interventions. The primary role of all Specialists around the state is to disseminate the knowledge generated by the University through educational programs and services to support the individual, organizational, and community goals of Missouri learners and clients.
• Create . Extension Faculty develop innovative and research-informed educational products, services, and materials and scholarly products, including curricula, publications, presentations, and other resources. Extension Faculty contribute to the scholarship of extension and engagement and to applied research, to evaluate and improve how programs and services result in learning and behavior changes that positively impact individuals and communities.
• Connect . Extension Faculty engage with learners, communities, and stakeholders including Extension Councils, government officials and agencies, partners, and with university and professional organizations. Strong connections help generate revenue to sustain and grow valued programming through grants, contracts, fees, gifts, and partnerships. Extension faculty intentionally foster diversity and inclusiveness by providing educational programs that connect to the varied needs of Missourians and their communities, through the cycle of market relations including needs assessment, promotion, and feedback utilizing a variety of media and venues.

Role Summary: The Associate General Counsel role will be a foundation employee who will primarily provide legal support to the Bill & Melinda Gates Agricultural Innovations, LLC, a subsidiary of the foundation. In furtherance of the charitable mission of this important subsidiary, the responsibilities of this role include responsibility for drafting and negotiating highly complex commercial international technology and IP license transactions and related research and development, collaboration, etc. agreements and arrangements involving a broad spectrum of agricultural technology or other biotech related fields. This role might also support other legal needs of the foundation as appropriate. The individual hired for this position will be expected to work in St. Louis, MO where this growing subsidiary organization is located.

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator - Legal Director

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids draws on lessons from tobacco control and its growing experience on other public health issues to support policy change campaigns around the globe to improve health. To date, that work includes obesity prevention and cardiovascular health, road safety, drowning prevention, preventing epidemics, and vital statistics.

Position Overview

Legal and policy analysis, along with strategic litigation, play a key role in GHAI’s policy advocacy efforts. The Legal Director will oversee all GHAI legal work and supervise GHAI legal staff and consultants. The Legal Director will provide leadership, strategic planning, and technical advice for GHAI teams to support in-country advocacy campaigns and strategic litigation through: review of legal contexts for policy reform; drafting and review of pending legislation or regulations; and providing guidance for litigation that advances effective health policy reforms. This includes working with the GHAI teams to identify in-country lawyers and coordinate with local and global partners to achieve policy goals. The Legal Director will also provide guidance in developing high-quality, tailored training and technical assistance frameworks to build the capacity of lawyers on staff and at partner organizations.

A particular focus will be leading the strategic legal work on the Obesity Prevention Program (OPP), which aims to pass and implement key policies to develop healthier food environments. The OPP is currently working in six countries (Barbados, Brazil, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico and South Africa), supporting both policy advocacy campaigns and litigation. Beginning in 2020, OPP efforts may extend to other countries on a limited basis.

This position is based in Washington, DC and is open to U.S. citizens and other applicants who already possess U.S. work authorization.
