Summary of Job Duties:

The National Agricultural Law Center Research Fellows- Remote Position (Evergreen) is a pool posting that will be used to collect applications to fill related temporary positions as they become available. This pool posting will expire on November 1, 2020. Applicants wishing to be considered after this date must re-apply.

The position will focus on conducting legal research and writing projects that meaningfully assist the NALC and its partners in serving state, regional, and national stakeholders in furtherance of its mission as the nation’s leading source of objective agricultural and food law research and information. Specific areas of research include but are not limited to:
• Environmental regulation of agriculture;
• Food safety and food labeling;
• Agricultural finance and credit; and
• Other relevant issues such as agricultural data and technology, local and regional food systems, and agricultural labor.


Qualifications:

Successful applicants will have completed at least their first year of law school and have demonstrated skills and experience in legal research and writing. Previous experience or background in agriculture is preferred, but not required. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred, but not required. Applicants must be motivated and capable of reliably implementing work projects in a distance working arrangement. This position will require a commitment of at least ten hours a week, with flexibility given for exams and other academic or holiday events.

Position Summary

The College of Law at Michigan State University is currently establishing a pool of part-time, fixed-term instructors. Applications will be reviewed, and these positions will be filled on an as-needed basis within two years of the position posting date.  Positions may be for one or more semesters, including fall, spring and summer.

Duties: Responsibilities may include 1.) developing and teaching professional and graduate courses in law and law-related classes; 2.) providing advice and guidance to students during class and office hours and/or 3.) assisting with promotion and development of MSU College of Law programming.  Courses may be in person or online.

In addition to East Lansing-based teaching opportunities, the College of Law anticipates needs in several of its study abroad and online programs.  These programs have additional specific goals and requirements as described below. 

The MSU College of Law Global Food Law Program is an online program that prepares students to influence food policy; interpret international laws and regulations governing the food system; and bridge the gap between regulators and industry.  The program ensures students understand the legal complexities of food laws and their impact across national boundaries while applying sound science and food law.  The Global Food Law Program seeks candidates for part-time, fixed term instructors to develop and teach online classes within this program.  Responsibilities include teaching courses in Biotechnology Law and Food Products; Current Issues in Global Food Law; and a Survey Course on Hemp; US Food and Drug Law; Food Science for Lawyers; Administrative Law: Labeling and Food Safety.  Preferred candidates will have a legal background; experience working in industry; experience teaching online using the D2L platform; and possess a strong desire to move the global food law academy forward.

 

The MSU College of Law Summer Program in Opatija/Rijeka, Croatia runs annually in July and August.  It provides introductory instruction in intellectual property and computer law from an international perspective. The Croatia Summer Program seeks candidates for part-time, fixed term instructors to teach within this program.  Responsibilities include teaching courses in intellectual property, including international patent, copyright, and trademark law.  Candidates will teach on location in Opatija, Croatia.  Preferred candidates will have extensive scholarly, teaching, and practice experience in these areas.

 

The MSU College of Law Summer Program in Kyoto, Japan runs annually in May and June.  The program is designed to give students detailed exposure to public or private law with a significant focus on comparative and Japanese law. The Kyoto, Japan Summer Program seeks candidates for part-time, fixed term instructors to teach within this program.  Responsibilities include teaching courses in the Japanese Legal System, International Business Transactions or International Commercial Arbitration and Litigation. A significant focus on these topics and knowledge of Japanese law is important. Candidates will teach on location in Kyoto, Japan. Preferred candidates will have the ability to fund their own travel to and from Japan (housing is provided by the program, but airfare and ground transportation is not), speak fluent English and conversational Japanese, have significant publications in major journals or with major book publishers and/or experience in the specific field related to their preferred course.

 

The MSU College of Law Institute for Comparative Law & Jurisprudence in BiaÅ‚ystok, Poland runs annually in May and June. The Poland Summer Program seeks candidates for part-time, fixed term instructors to teach within this program. Responsibilities include teaching courses in international and comparative law.  Candidates will teach on location in BiaÅ‚ystok, Poland.  Preferred candidates will have extensive scholarly, teaching, and practice experience in the areas relative to their preferred course.

The Associate General Counsel provides legal advice to the Company and generally assists the Law Department and individual business units with a wide range of dispute resolution and litigation matters. Associate Corporate Counsel: Sovos Brands, Louisville, CO

 We are seeking a motivated and proactive lawyer to serve as Associate Counsel. Staff Counsel: Leprino Foods Co., Denver, CO

 Overview:

Working closely with other attorneys in Leprino’s legal department, the Staff Counsel provides legal advice, counseling, and leadership to all levels of the organization on a broad range of legal matters, including contracts, real estate, and litigation. The Staff Counsel is an effective lawyer, business partner, and facilitator for various organizational groups, including supply chain/procurement, technical services, sales and marketing, quality, and operations.   • Provides support and assistance in all areas of the Company’s compliance program.
  • Assists with investigation, fact-finding and other investigatory needs in connection with situations that arise under the Company’s compliance program.

Litigation Support


  • In conjunction with senior management and other members of the Legal Department, supports all litigation, including contract interpretation, litigation assessments and settlement analyses, and general legal advice on litigation matters.
  • Assists with the development of overall strategy and approach with respect to designated litigation matters and engages cross functional teams to support the company’s litigation needs.
  • Interacts with and helps manage outside legal services (attorneys, experts, etc.) on litigation matters.
  • Manages discovery process for all litigation matters, including distribution of appropriate document holds, document production, e-discovery, etc.

General Legal Department Accountabilities


  • Directs, manages and/or assists with a variety of other legal matters outside of primary accountabilities as they arise or may be assigned. These matters may include:
  • Data privacy;
  • Environmental issues, including issues relating to water and wastewater, air quality, land-use, and chemical storage and handling.
  • Food regulatory matters, including labeling and other associated matters.
  • Marketing assistance, such as review of advertising claims and other marketing materials.
  • M & A support.
  • International business transactions, including corporate governance support for existing and new Leprino operations and activities;
  • Labor and employment matters;
  • Evaluation of the legal and non-legal aspects of key business challenges; and
  • Other legal, corporate, and business matters and duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications & Experience:
  • Undergraduate degree from a respected university in any discipline
  • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Licensed to Practice law in Colorado (or licensed to practice in another state with the ability to obtain Colorado licensure within six months of hire date).
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a licensed attorney with an emphasis on experience in transactional law.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
  • Mid- Large law firm experience.
  • In-house legal experience, ideally with a privately held organization.

The Assistant General Counsel—Nationally Managed Business is responsible for providing legal advice and supporting Nationally Managed Business, drafting and negotiating a broad spectrum of commercial agreements, and integrating legal and business needs to ensure that appropriate policies and procedures are followed.
