Legislative Assistant to Congresswoman Mary Miller

Congresswoman Mary Miller is seeking a legislative assistant with an interest in agricultural policy and a strong commitment to conservative values. Competitive candidates have 1-2 years of Capitol Hill/related policy experience, are well-organized, and have excellent writing and interpersonal skills. Assistant General Counsel, USDA Office of General Counsel

The incumbent serves as Assistant General Counsel in the Marketing, Regulatory and Food Safety Programs Division (MRFSPD), Office of the General Counsel (OGC), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

• Provides legal advice and overall legal support to the Under Secretaries, agency administrators, and other senior officials who are responsible for the programs and activities of the Department. 
• Manages the development and application of legal policies, and supervises a staff of attorneys who draft, review, and approve, for legal sufficiency regulations, legislation, cooperative agreements, memoranda of understanding, and other agreements.
• Prepares legal memoranda and opinions on questions of law; prepares litigation reports, pleadings, statements of fact, declarations, briefs, and other documents in connection with lawsuits filed by or against the United States.
• Works with the Department of Justice in the trial of cases in the Federal courts; and prepares and present cases before Administrative Law Judges, the Judicial Officer, and other hearing officers appointed for particular proceedings.
• Participates, as counsel for the Department, in conferences and meetings with leading representatives of industry, business, and agriculture, and interested and affected members of the public.
• Responsible for developing and recommending procedures for handling the work of the division; overseeing the training and development of the legal and support staff; assigning work and evaluating the performance of the legal and support staff.

Food Policy Research Fellow, MET Council on Jewish Poverty

Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. They fight poverty through comprehensive social services and by treating each client with compassion, integrity and respect.

The New York State Food Policy Research Fellow will report directly to the Food Policy Manager and collaborate directly with our Food Policy Coalition Building Fellow to assess the statewide need for kosher and halal emergency food and benefits access. The Fellow will analyze publicly available data and generate additional quantitative data to evaluate the need and available resources within the specific geographic locations of Jewish and Muslim communities throughout NYS. Additionally, the Fellow will work to develop multiple deliverables based on this outreach and analysis, including a formal policy report that includes detailed geospatial analysis along with state and local policy recommendations. In addition to specific research work, the Food Policy Fellow will represent Met Council in interviews and meetings focusing on food insecurity and cultural competency and work closely with like-minded organizations throughout New York City and State. This position requires an individual able to thrive in a fast-paced work environment, with a background in local and state emergency food programming, NYS food and nutrition policy, and data collection and quantitative research methods, along with a strong interest in hunger, nutrition, and cultural competency issues, and the experience and ability to work and communicate with a variety of audiences.
