Valley Food and Farm Coordinator with Vital Communities in VT

Valley Food & Farm is a program of Vital Communities, which engages citizens, organizations, and communities in creating solutions to our region's challenges.

Vital Communities began with a vision: what if people in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire could access fresh food from their communities, knowing where the food came from and who grew it? And what if farmers had access to a multitude of markets...

That vision existed in the minds of the staff and board of Vital Communities, who then started a program called Valley VitalSigns. These folks realized that farming and farmland plays a crucial role in providing the region with its open space and rural character, as well as with food. Out of their work came the Valley Food & Farm program.

Valley Food & Farm carries out its mission to "foster the relationships that make agriculture a vital part of daily community life" in concrete and practical ways.

Valley Food & Farm also published its first Guide to local agriculture in 2005. A new issue of the Valley Food & Farm Guide comes out each year in early spring, and there is a year-round searchable version on our website. Valley Food & Farm staff and interns work diligently to keep the Guide updated so that folks can find accurate information about where to get locally grown and raised food – at farms and at other locations such as farmers’ markets, restaurants, stores.

Our agricultural ebulletin, Tidbits, available at no charge, goes out to over 2000 people. Tidbits includes information about seasonal farm products and services, and news and events relating to local agriculture.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will work to support a vibrant local food system including cultivating new farmers and local food access.

Responsibilities include project and event management, facilitation and fundraising.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have excellent communications skills, be a team player, and be an outgoing, well-organized self-starter. Agricultural work experience is highly valued.

This is a fulltime 40hrs/wk position with benefits. EOE.

The Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking an attorney with four or more years of experience, to be based in either its Chapel Hill, North Carolina or Charlottesville, Virginia office. This is an excellent opportunity to join an organization that is successfully addressing some of the most important and challenging environmental issues facing the Southeast and the nation.

About SELC: With offices across the region (Charlottesville, VA; Chapel Hill, NC; Atlanta, GA; Asheville, NC; Charleston, SC; Washington, DC; Richmond, VA; Birmingham, AL; and now Nashville, TN), SELC uses law and policy expertise to protect the South’s natural resources—its land, air, water, coast and wetlands—and to preserve our rural countryside and community character. Although our regional focus is the Southeast, much of our work is national in scope and impact.

SELC works collaboratively with over 100 national, state, and local groups to enhance their efficacy and achieve our common conservation goals. Our legal and policy staff comprises some of the nation’s leading experts in their respective fields, and over its 25-year history, SELC has earned a reputation as one of the most effective environmental organizations in the country. We currently have a staff of 85, including 44 attorneys. Additional information regarding our work and staff is available at www.southernenvironment.org.

About the position: SELC’s work is focused in five program areas: energy and healthy air, transportation and land use policy, clean water, coast and wetlands, and forest protection. The person hired for this position will have significant responsibility for work in one or more of these program areas. Work will include litigation in state and federal courts, advocacy in state and federal administrative proceedings, and policy analysis and development in various settings at the state and federal levels.
Compensation: SELC offers salaries competitive with leading national environmental non-profits, and an excellent benefits package.

Qualifications: We are seeking an attorney with a strong work ethic and sense of initiative. Energy Attorney: If viewed as a country, SELC’s six-state region would rank 7th in the world in carbon dioxide emissions, due in large part to the region’s heavy reliance on coal to generate electricity. The energy attorney will be part of our Clean Energy and Air team, advocating strategies to reduce the region’s outsized carbon footprint and improve air quality by decreasing reliance on coal generation and promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy resources as alternatives to traditional power plants. This position will focus on policy work with the Tennessee Valley Authority as it decides how best to meet future energy needs and replace its aging coal power plants, and on the range of energy issues impacting Tennessee, including coal mining and coal waste disposal.
