Attorney Positions (Chapel Hill, NC or Charlotesville, VA)
The Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking an attorney with four or more years of experience, to be based in either its Chapel Hill, North Carolina or Charlottesville, Virginia office. About the position: SELC’s work is focused in five program areas: energy and healthy air, transportation and land use policy, clean water, coast and wetlands, and forest protection. The person hired for this position will have significant responsibility for work in one or more of these program areas. Work will include litigation in state and federal courts, advocacy in state and federal administrative proceedings, and policy analysis and development in various settings at the state and federal levels.

The Southern Environmental Law Center is happy to announce the opening of its newest office in Nashville, Tennessee. We have recently hired a managing attorney and are now seeking two additional attorneys to complete the three-attorney team that will launch the office. One attorney will focus on issues related to energy policy and global warming.

Energy Attorney: If viewed as a country, SELC’s six-state region would rank 7th in the world in carbon dioxide emissions, due in large part to the region’s heavy reliance on coal to generate electricity. The energy attorney will be part of our Clean Energy and Air team, advocating strategies to reduce the region’s outsized carbon footprint and improve air quality by decreasing reliance on coal generation and promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy resources as alternatives to traditional power plants. This position will focus on policy work with the Tennessee Valley Authority as it decides how best to meet future energy needs and replace its aging coal power plants, and on the range of energy issues impacting Tennessee, including coal mining and coal waste disposal. It may also involve litigation in state and federal courts and advocacy in state and federal administrative proceedings.
