Assistant General Counsel, Crop Life America




Assist the General Counsel in leading the organization’s legal and regulatory advocacy, in coordination with association members and other CropLife America (CLA) professionals. Manage outside counsel representing CLA in litigation, including budgeting responsibility. Provide legal oversight for the preparation of regulatory comments and other advocacy communications. Assist General Counsel in providing legal and compliance support to the organization. Lead committees and communicate with members as requested.


  


Manage litigation matters, including budgets, outside counsel and communication with staff, members and other stakeholders.

Provide legal review of regulatory comments, communications materials, and other association documents. 

Monitor, review and analyze relevant regulatory initiatives, including the identification of emerging policy issues, to determine potential impacts on the crop protection industry, and in coordination with CLA staff and members, develop comments or other response, as appropriate.

Provide legal support for state and local government advocacy efforts.

Build on and maintain contact with key regulatory officials important to achievement of CropLife America’s objectives under the direction of the General Counsel.  

Provide antitrust support for industry association committees.

Prepare minutes for CLA Board of Director meetings.

Serve as staff liaison and assist with the management of the Law and Biodiversity Committees, or other committees as needed.

Assist staff in organizing informational panels on topics of interest to CLA members.

Assist General Counsel in supervision of department staff and assign tasks as needed and appropriate.


Requirements

    

  • Law degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • 3 - 5 years of professional experience, preferably litigation, regulatory and/or antitrust (law firm, non-profit, or government).
  • Must be a member in good standing of the Virginia Bar or a member in good standing of another U.S. State Bar and be eligible to   waive into the Virginia Bar.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret complex statutory, regulatory and other legal documents.
  • Attention to detail in composing, preparing and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to write committee minutes, issue papers, legal opinions, regulatory comments, corporate resolutions, and correspondence with few edits or corrections.
  • Understanding of corporate governance, especially in a trade association setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Mastery of communications and organizational platforms such as Teams, OnBoard, Concur.
  • Positive attitude, strong organizational skills, project and time management skills and the ability to multi-task are essential.
  • Domestic travel anticipated to comprise no more than 20% of the position. No international travel anticipated.
