Energy Attorney: If viewed as a country, SELC’s six-state region would rank 7th in the world in carbon dioxide emissions, due in large part to the region’s heavy reliance on coal to generate electricity. The energy attorney will be part of our Clean Energy and Air team, advocating strategies to reduce the region’s outsized carbon footprint and improve air quality by decreasing reliance on coal generation and promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy resources as alternatives to traditional power plants. This position will focus on policy work with the Tennessee Valley Authority as it decides how best to meet future energy needs and replace its aging coal power plants, and on the range of energy issues impacting Tennessee, including coal mining and coal waste disposal. It may also involve litigation in state and federal courts and advocacy in state and federal administrative proceedings.

Staff Attorney: SELC’s work in Tennessee is focused in three program areas in addition to energy and healthy air: transportation and land use policy, clean water, and forest protection.
