The Washtenaw Food Policy Council (WFPC) has a mission to increase and preserve access to safe, local and healthy food for all Washtenaw County residents.
The WFPC will hire a Food Policy Council Coordinator and Mapping Consultant to work to fulfill the goal of the capacity-building and mapping projects. The Consultant will work with both Policy Action Teams (PATs) and the full Council to support the creation of policy priorities. S/he will also oversee the mapping project, including researching and assessing existing food system mapping efforts, identifying assets and gaps, developing an action plan for a county-wide coordinated mapping effort, and utilizing the food system map to develop recommendations for policy impacts. S/he will also provide other research and coordination support to the WFPC as needed. The Food Policy Council Coordinator and Mapping Consultant reports to the WFPC Chair.
RESPONSIBILITIES
● Work with WFPC as a whole and PATs to create a WFPC policy platform
● Create and coordinate a Food Systems Mapping Committee, including Policy Action Team members, key stakeholders, and other interested community members
● Gather information about and existing mapping efforts (“Local Washtenaw” Branding & Marketing Campaign, Food Waste Policy Action Team County GIS map, USDA Food Atlas, others); identify assets and gaps in mapping; work with PATs to identify mapping needs that relate to policy issues
● Make recommendations and/or action plan for a county-wide coordinated mapping effort
● Oversee work with mapping partners and create, as needed, food system maps per plan
● Communicate with the council, appropriate stakeholders, and general citizenry through public education, Google maps, infographics, GIS, etc
● Work with WFPC and PATs to effectively build, sustain, and support a diverse council
● Participate in and/or provide coalition-building opportunities.
● 3-5 years professional experience in one or more of the following areas: food systems, agriculture, economic development, public health, public policy, environmental or food security issues.
● Knowledge and understanding of local food system issues.
● Project management experience.
● Exceptional organizational, management, research, and analytical skills.
● Experience working collaboratively and bringing together a diverse group of people.
● Strong oral and written communication skills.
● Experience with GIS and interactive web portal development desired.
PAY RANGE/LEVEL OF EFFORT: $18 per hour for 15 hours per week, December 2013-July 2014. Contracted hire through Washtenaw County Public Health.
