Our Global Law Services organization provides key legal resources for the John Deere enterprise, charged with the task of providing representation for the company regarding various products and services in our domestic and global markets. These legal counsel opportunities can range from Human Resources/Compliance, Patent, Trademark and Corporate Securities to Product Liability. No matter what the topic, our legal team ensures the John Deere team continues to operate with integrity.
What You Will Do:
As a Patent Attorney for John Deere you will provide Intellectual Property counsel, recommendations, and alternatives for complex legal questions and issues. In addition, you will:
- Draft, negotiate, and/or file legal briefs and documents including patent applications, clearance opinions, notices, agreements and licenses
- Assist senior attorneys in analysis of IP issues
- Review legal documents for compliance with applicable laws
- Stay current on emerging trends in IP law through continuing legal education, reading, professional conferences, and participating in professional associations
What It Takes
We need an excellent communicator, both written and verbal, who thrives on solving problems and working in a global team environment. Ideally, you will have a Juris Doctorate degree and related experience. We also require:
- Knowledge of IP (Intellectual Property) risk management within areas of responsibility
- Experience with IP legal issues affecting area of responsibility, ability to identify issues associated with assigned tasks, and able to spot ethical issues in practice
- Skill in interpersonal communications, negotiation, and conflict resolution
- Minimum 2 years of experience in the practice of law in a private law firm or corporate law department
A strong candidate will also have:
- Knowledge of Intellectual Asset Management, including Intellectual Property strategic planning for product lines, technologies and services
- Prior experience in the management of projects including intellectual property, competitive intelligence, client education, contracts
- Experience with patent preparation and prosecution, in the US and outside US
- Electrical engineering, computer engineering or computer science degree, or experience drafting patent applications in these areas strongly preferred
- USPTO registration strongly preferred
