Legal Director / Senior Corporate Counsel – Marketing & Communications, The Clorox Company





Reporting to the Senior Director of Strategic Growth and Marketing, this leadership role will partner with stakeholders across Clorox businesses, including business leaders, to protect and grow our brands. Specifically, the role will have responsibility for providing strategic, senior-level counseling and other legal support in the areas of consumer protection, marketing and communications law, business strategy, and sustainability. The role will encompass partnering with business leaders, brand, marketing, communications, research and development, government affairs, and regulatory teams to drive, develop and ensure compliance as to business strategy, marketing materials and other brand and company communications. The role will also ideally serve as supervisor and people manager of the Marketing and Communications (MarComm) team’s paralegals.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as a senior attorney on the Marketing and Communications team (MarComm), with deep subject matter expertise on U.S. regulations, industry guidelines, and self-regulatory standards for marketing and advertising, including product claims, substantiation standards, sweepstakes and promotions, endorsements and testimonials, competitive advertising, and sponsorships.
  • Provide counseling to general managers, marketing, R&D and regulatory stakeholders on claim substantiation and concomitant risk assessments, focusing on strategic and highly-regulated brands.
  • Provide legal advice and counseling as to diverse advertising platforms, including traditional media, as well as digital, social media, e-commerce, behavioral advertising, influencer marketing, etc.
  • Counsel on regulations relating to the promotion and sale of foods, drugs, cosmetics, dietary supplements, and registered disinfecting products (FTC, FDA, EPA, CPSC, USDA).
  • Counsel stakeholders on questions related to sustainability positioning, programs and partnerships across the Clorox portfolio of brands and in relation to the company’s ESG goals and commitments.
  • Provide strategic counseling and oversight as to competitive challenges, including advertising and consumer protection matters before the NAD and the Federal Trade Commission. Work closely with litigation counsel as a subject matter expert with respect to Lanham Act and consumer class action matters.
  • Deliver timely, effective and strategic legal advice to senior stakeholders that is current with the evolving regulatory expectations and litigation trends particularly as applied to advertising and marketing in the CPG category.
  • Develop and give trainings to stakeholders on new developments in the law that affect our businesses.
  • Provide regular substantive training as to and oversee paralegal review of marketing materials, promotions, and contracts.
  • Serve as a people manager for MarComm paralegals.
  • Design, implement and oversee process upgrades, technology and other strategic opportunities as to process improvements, especially as to the manner in which stakeholders seek and receive counsel from the MarComm team.
  • Manage MarComm team budget, including as to the use of outside counsel.
  • Additional responsibilities may include regulatory, IP, litigation, transactional, privacy, international and other work as business needs dictate.

What we look for:


Years and Type of Experience
  • Preference for at least 10 years of experience as an attorney counseling on truth-in-advertising and other consumer protection issues as to regulated CPG products.
  • Experience in a top-tier law firm and in-house experience counseling on such laws.
  • Demonstrated ability to approach issues with both a general management and general counsel mindset, considering business priorities in providing legal recommendations and solutions, as well as the ability to spot legal issues across disciplines and facilitate conversations with the right subject matter experts to ensure the delivery of holistic, actionable legal counsel to stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact collaboratively at a senior level with business management teams and senior company executives.
  • Demonstrated success working as part of a team to achieve maximum success.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and an understanding of the unique business demands on the categories in which we play.

  • Some travel may be required.

Education Level/Degree
  • JD degree and bachelors; top tier undergraduate and law schools.
  • Member of the California State Bar, or eligible to register under the California State Bar in-house counsel program.
