Duties and Responsibilities:
Collaborate with Quality Assurance Specialists, Product Developers, Exclusive Brands Sourcing Team and Vendors to lead the development of specifications and associated label sensitive information for dietary supplements and assigned categories for products sold by Whole Foods Market under Exclusive Brands. This includes maintaining and reviewing specifications and labels after launch to ensure consistent product quality and safety.
- Contribute to commercialization activities by providing technical guidance to help ensure products will meet WFM Exclusive Brands quality and regulatory labeling standards. Responsibilities include:
- Participate in the product compliance specification review and approval process with detailed attention to WFM quality standards, brand standards, and regulatory compliance for all label sensitive information.
- Ensure product claims are supported with substantiation per Whole Foods Market policy and compliant with all regulatory guidelines.
- Coordinate timely release of final label sensitive information to Commercialization Team according to category review schedule and agreed upon timelines.
- Collaborate with Legal Team to ensure product labels are compliant with applicable regulations.
- Work with Global Quality Assurance sub-teams to determine the correct allergen statement based on product risk, facility information, testing results and vendor communication.
- Review packaging during art development and First Production Approval to ensure final label is accurate and matches the information documented in the specification.
- Assist Team Leader with business strategies and initiatives, including those that drive efficiency, and continuous improvement. May also assist Team Leader with evaluation and hiring of team members.
- Evaluate nutritional test results for accuracy and compliance with the product specification and nutrient content claims.
- Maintain labeling policies and procedures for claims and special diets (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, etc.).
- Act as mentor and technical resource to contractors, direct reports and cross- functional team members as needed.
- Identify areas for business process improvement and seeks out stakeholders to make improvements in process.
- Provide technical project leadership skills and experience.
- Act as nutrition expert and lead the nutritional recommendations and guidance to team during product development process. Utilize third party partners to lead the effort to stay abreast of nutrition, health and wellness trends in the industry.
- Act as product labeling and compliance expert for assigned categories.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Food Science, Food Law or Science combined with 5+ yrs relevant work experience
- 4-6 years’ Regulatory and Compliance experience, Dietary Supplements preferred
- An understanding of FDA, USDA and FTC regulatory framework for dietary supplements and food regulations
- Experience communicating with suppliers, external certifications and specifications is preferred.
- Experience in the natural and organic food industry preferred.
- Comprehensive understanding of regulatory requirements and experience with labeling country of origin, natural flavors, and allergens
- Excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Able to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities and deliver against rapid development timelines.
- Ability to work on a cross functional team in a highly dynamic environment.
- Proficient Microsoft Office skills (Outlook, Excel, Work) required; database experience preferred.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Ability to make decisions or judgments and know when to seek subject matter expert opinion. Ability to work effectively with little or no direct supervision.
