Litigation Attorney

The Alaska office of Earthjustice is seeking applications for an Associate Attorney position. 
The core issues for the Alaska office include protection of the Alaska coastal rain forest, safeguarding of America’s Arctic, action to combat climate change and limit its effects, wildlife conservation, protection of lands and waters from mining activities, conservation of the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska marine ecosystem, air and water quality enforcement, and national park and other public lands management.  Our clients include national, regional and local conservation organizations, Alaska Native tribal organizations, and community groups, as well as other organizations concerned about enforcing the laws to protect the environment.
The Alaska office has locations in Juneau and Anchorage. 
The term for this position is three years.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Among other responsibilities, the Associate Attorney will:
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on issues relating to ongoing or potential litigation projects;
  • Draft motions, briefs and other pleadings;
  • Prepare comments on proposed agency actions, permits, and environmental review documents;
  • Investigate facts and assist with case development; and
  • Interact with clients and work with experts.
The Associate Attorney may have primary responsibility for some matters but will generally work collaboratively with other lawyers in the office.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Law school graduate admitted to or prepared to apply for admission to the Alaska Bar;

Founded in 1996, Red Wiggler’s main tenet is to provide gainful employment for adults with developmental disabilities through a unique horticulture program that uses organic agricultural practices. We assign the growers farm tasks based on their individual abilities which are nurtured by our staff. Our growers cultivate vegetables on seven acres, and then sell or donate this produce to a diverse population.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Farm Manager co-manages with the Field and Facilities Manager, planning and implementing daily activities at Red Wiggler. The Farm Manager's primary responsibilities for our vegetable operation include: greenhouse management, implementing planting schedules, managing work crews, harvesting, and post-harvest handling and distribution. Management activities include managing volunteers and growers, setting vocational goals, teaching job skills, and tracking skills development. The Farm Manager will participate in overall leadership of the nonprofit including: developing and implementing safety practices, hiring and supervising seasonal staff and apprentices, and participating in strategic planning.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of four years of experience in sustainable farming, with at least two years of proven farm management experience
  • Experience with greenhouse management, post-harvest handling, and storage of vegetables
  • Strong mathematical and computer skills, including calculating distributions and keeping records of planting, harvest, and distribution
  • An associate’s degree or relevant experience
  • Experience working with students and people with developmental/intellectual disabilities will be helpful
  • Tractor operation experience preferred
  • Farm market/retail experience preferred

Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles (SEE-LA) is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that operates Certified Farmers’ Markets in the metropolitan Los Angeles area, including the largest, the Sunday Hollywood Farmers’ Market which celebrated 26 years of service in 2017.  Other Markets include Echo Park, Atwater Village, Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, Central Avenue and Watts/Willowbrook MLK Hospital Campus.

SEE-LA also is a statewide leader in the SNAP/EBT, WIC and Market Match benefit and incentive programs which provide the opportunity for low-income customers to purchase the freshest fruits and vegetables available at local farmers’ markets.  SEE-LA has also experienced tremendous growth in recent years through expansion of its Champions for Change/Pompea Smith Good Cooking Buena Cocina Nutrition Education program in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.  

The mission of SEE-LA is to build sustainable food systems and promote social and cultural activities that benefit both low-to-moderate income residents of Los Angeles while also supporting California small- and mid-sized farms and local small businesses.  SEE-LA’s current fiscal year operating budget is approximately $1.7 million dollars.  SEE-LA currently has a total staff of 31 full and part-time employees and its administrative offices are located in Hollywood.    
JOB DESCRIPTION
Primary Function of Executive Director:
The role of Executive Director (ED) of SEE-LA is accountable for providing leadership, fiscal oversight, strategic direction and a clear vision for the development and achievement of the organization’s mission in partnership with the 12 member Board of Directors.  The ED has the primary role in developing new and innovative plans for strategic planning, fund development, staff development, annual budgeting, marketing and public relations as well as setting organizational policies and standards.  The ED is also tasked with identifying new programs and initiatives to enhance the agency and further its mission and services.  In addition to providing organizational leadership, the ED must be comfortable with and able to work with a myriad of funders corporate, private and governmental as well as many community stakeholders.     

Required Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
  • The Executive Director must be an empowering lead of the organization, collaborative thinker and creative problem-solver with outstanding communication and diplomatic skills;
  • Possess at least 5-7 years of successful leadership experience in a diverse organization;
  • Demonstrate solid general management skills including managing many diverse groups of people possessing different interests and talents, ability to exercise change management when necessary, the ability to make very difficult budget decisions when required, financial skill ability, fund development and fundraising, and comfort with all types of contributor including government, corporate, foundation and individuals of all backgrounds as well as experience managing contract staff and services;
  • Grant Proposal writing experience;
  • Experience working with nonprofit Boards and members of myriad backgrounds, interests and financial resources;
  • Public speaking experience and ease preferred;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with both professional as well as support personnel.

Major Responsibilities (but not limited to):
  • Assumes fiduciary responsibility of managing SEE-LA’s annual operating budget to ensure fiscal solvency, prepare the annual budget in conjunction with the Board and ultimate budget approval by the Board, ensures the staff adhere to the approved budget and develops a long-term plan to maintain financial sustainability of SEE-LA and facilitation of agency annual audit(s);
  • Manages and oversees the fund development efforts of SEE-LA, including planning, strategies and implementation, tracks and determines the financial needs of the organization. Monitors current and future revenue streams including individual donations and grants as well as annual fundraising event productions and goals, as well as ensuring all contract and grant compliance as well as annual tax return (IRS 990) filings;   
  • Works in a collaborative and cooperative manner many various SEE-LA stakeholder groups of divergent backgrounds, including funders, community representatives, political figures and government officials, farmers, artisans and local businesses;
  • Oversees and manages all of SEE-LA’s programs, projects and commitments to ensure successful implementation and that each program and farmers’ market has the necessary resources, both financial and human that is needed to function efficiently;
  • Hires, develops, manages and supports a high quality and productive staff through supervision, delegation and internal and external staff development and team-building and performance evaluation. Provide staff with opportunities for growth where possible through the budget;
  • Serves as a non-voting member of the SEE-LA Board of Directors. Supports Board meeting administration including attending and reporting at all Board meetings and keeping all Board members updated on the current status of the organization and advising Board on all pertinent strategies, resolutions, and issues of importance at-hand;
  • Stays informed of new industry developments and trends in order to create a strategic vision that supports growth and relevance of SEE-LA.

  • Write policy blog posts and contribute to Federal Register comments (as applicable)

Summary

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent office within the Department of Agriculture (USDA) whose mission is to promote excellence, integrity, and accountability throughout the USDA. The Cornucopia Institute is seeking a full-time employee to join our team.  The Associate Director will assist with the overall management of Cornucopia’s operations in support of its mission.
The Associate Director will oversee the organization’s financial management and development activities (including supervising staff involved with proposal writing and grants administration, fundraising mailings, occasional fundraising events, etc.).  This person will also be involved with overseeing communications (publishing research reports, electronic and print newsletters, and web and social media, etc.) and related staff supervision in addition to overall HR management.  The Associate Director will report to and work closely with Cornucopia’s Director to carry out organizational activities.

The Cornucopia Institute has become one of the most preeminent and effective public interest groups, focusing on regulatory and market-based implications of agroecology in the United States.  The organization acts as an organic industry watchdog protecting organics and alternative marketing mechanisms, allowing farmers and consumers to connect.  We seek to defend the integrity of the organic food label from governmental regulatory indifference as well as from agribusiness profiteering due to the use of unethical, illegal or questionable food and agricultural practices.
Strong candidates will have practical experience and/or a strong academic background in a number of key areas of responsibility:
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization, including employee supervision and hiring
  • Understanding of and experience in fundraising, including grants, direct mail, online giving, major gifts, and donor solicitations
  • Overseeing communications functions in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to strategize and engage with other key staff in the successful planning and execution of policy and research initiatives
  • Experience (or strong academic credentials) in double entry accounting systems/nonprofit financial management

Earthjustice’s International program is seeking fall clerks who share a passion for justice and a healthy environment.
Earthjustice’s International program works in international tribunals, domestic courts, and international institutions to defend the right to a healthy environment around the world.  International program staff represent and collaborate with organizations and communities to establish, strengthen, and enforce national and international legal protections for the environment and public health.  Core focus areas include combating climate change, including by supporting worldwide efforts to stop coal mining and consumption, and promoting clean energy; protecting the international Arctic; building marine resilience to ocean warming and acidification; and strengthening the ability of citizens around the world to participate in environmental protection.  At the heart of our work is the principle—which we were the first organization to advocate internationally—that all people have a right to a healthy and sustainable environment. 
Clerks play an important role in the development and implementation of international legal strategies to combat some of the most pressing threats to the environment around the world.  Under the supervision of an attorney, clerks’ primary responsibilities are to conduct legal and policy research, and draft legal documents.  Depending on our docket, clerks might draft submissions to US courts or international tribunals, petition international environmental or human rights bodies, write memos or briefs in support of litigation in foreign domestic courts, research issues related to international environmental and human rights law, and/or develop public outreach materials, such as press releases and blog posts. 
Although not required, the ideal candidate will have: 
  • A demonstrated commitment to or interest in international and/or environmental issues. 
  • Experience working in cross-cultural settings.
  • Coursework or job-related experience in international or international environmental law.
