The Good Food Institute is looking for the Policy Associate. This is a great opportunity for someone who want to use their writing and analysis skills to advocate for public investment and fair rules to create a better future of food.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Producing clear and insightful research and analysis.

• Content creation: writing persuasive and error-free letters, comments, policy briefs, and fact sheets to support GFI’s policy priorities.

• Staying abreast of relevant policy developments and communicating them to the team.

• Working with other departments to provide policy support to their initiatives and to encourage their involvement, as appropriate, in the Policy team’s work.

• Following all lobbying reporting procedures, as applicable (training will be provided).

• Performing other duties as assigned, including providing occasional support to GFI lobbyists.

Qualifications & Skills

• At least three years of professional experience. Experience with legislative analysis is a plus.

• Ability to produce persuasive, well-reasoned, and error-free writing on complex topics.

• Exceptional attention to detail.

• A strong work ethic and self-motivation.

• A solutions-oriented mindset. 

• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

• Flexibility and a positive attitude.

• Ability to use sound judgment in setting and managing priorities, proposing and meeting deadlines, and resolving logistic challenges.

• Proficiency in Google Workplace applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Calendar).

• Cross-cultural sensitivity and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. 

• Comfort working in a rapidly growing and evolving organization.

• Strong support for GFI’s philosophy and mission; demonstrated interest in public health, environmentalism, animal protection, or hunger relief.

Compensation

• Salary: $95,000-110,000  (depending on experience and qualifications)

ASPCA: Director of Farm Animal Legislation

ASPCA is seeking to hir a  Director of Farm Animal Legislation. The role of the Director will include lobbying members of Congress and their staff, as well as interfacing with federal agencies to advance pro-farm animal initiatives. The new hire would work closely with the Senior Director of Federal Affairs, the greater Government Relations team, and the farm animal welfare team to develop strategies to advance pro-animal policies in the agriculture policy space, mainly at the federal level, but with some state work included as well. Center for Science in the Public Interest: Policy Associate

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), the nation’s leading, independent authority on food and nutrition, seeks a Policy Associate to advocate for state and local policies to improve healthy food access through the food retail environment. This work will engage and support historically under-resourced communities that experience health disparities.

 The Policy Associate will support CSPI's broader healthy retail work. We are mobilizing advocates, coalition partners, and communities to support state and local policies and corporate campaigns to make healthy choices easier at food retailers. We urge supermarkets and other large food retail stores to shift the mix of products that they promote and make available to consumers. Through research and pilot programs, we aim to create evidence-based campaigns that will be both beneficial to the health of consumers and economically sustainable for retailers. We advocate for policy and programmatic changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that create a healthier food environment. And we are leading efforts to have federal and state agencies end trade practices that stifle fair competition among food manufacturers and that reinforce the marketing of unhealthy food by retailers.

The Policy Associate position reports to the Senior Policy Scientist. The Policy Associate will operate out of CSPI’s Washington, DC office or remotely.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Work with the Senior Policy Associate to develop and implement advocacy goals and strategies for nutrition policy campaigns. Collaborate with outreach and capacity building, communications, scientific, legal, and other policy staff.

    Strengthen existing relationships and broaden support for food and nutrition policies with partners and elected and appointed officials at the national, state, and local levels, including groups and individuals advocating for public health, racial and health equity and social justice.

    Provide technical assistance, materials, and strategic advice to organizations, coalitions, and policy makers, mobilize grassroots, support federal, state and local advocacy (including lobbying) efforts in support of food and nutrition policies.

    Write and develop advocacy materials, including: fact sheets, reports, letters, social media posts, testimony, petitions, infographics, talking points, and action alerts.

    Review scientific literature to inform policy positions and advocacy strategies.

    Organize and represent CSPI at meetings, events, briefings, webinars, calls, and with the press.

    Supervise interns.

    Carry out other departmental activities as needed.

Maryland Sea Grant/Agriculture Law Education Initiative Legal Policy Fellowship

Maryland Sea Grant (MDSG) and the Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI) are excited to invite applications for a one-year legal fellowship. Please come join our dynamic team of legal experts and scientists to work at the exciting interface of law, policy, and environmental research. This one year fellowship has the possibility for a second year renewal in mutual agreement between the fellow, MDSG, and funding availability.

MDSG supports research, education, extension, and outreach on critical environmental issues in the Chesapeake and coastal bays and their watersheds. ALEI is comprised of legal specialists and other extension specialists who help agricultural producers understand and comply with state, federal, and local laws and regulations.

The Maryland Sea Grant legal fellow will help work toward these goals through projects involving training and programming for government agencies, coastal industries, and coastal communities addressing coastal law and policy in Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay.

Fellows will be contractual employees of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science-MDSG. This position is full-time with benefits, Contractual Contingent 2, with an expected salary of $54,000 plus fringe benefits including healthcare options.

Eligibility:

• Applicants must have earned a J.D. or equivalent LL.M. for foreign-trained attorneys no earlier than June 2018
• Interest in exploring environmental legal research relevant to underresourced communities in coastal communities. 
• Enthusiasm for pursuing a career in the areas of natural resource management, protection, or stewardship, or public or policy or law of marine and/or coastal environments
• Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills
• Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
