Director of Child Nutrition Policy & Programs: Hunger Free New York City

Hunger Free New York City (HFNYC) is seeking a full-time Director of Child Nutrition Policy and Programs to support its work to ensure that every child in New York City and America has access to sufficient, nutritious food. By increasing participation in federal child nutrition assistance programs, including school meals, the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), and Women, Infants, Children (WIC) program, we connect kids with the food they need to grow and thrive. The Director of Child Nutrition Policy and Programs will work with Hunger Free America (HFA) and Hunger Free NYC staff and community partners - utilizing advocacy, outreach, communications, and volunteerism - to promote child nutrition programs and services locally and nationally. This position is based in New York City and reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director of Child Nutrition Policy and Programs will:
  • Direct the organization’s policy, outreach, technical assistance, volunteerism, and research work on child nutrition programs, with a particular focus on the National School Breakfast Program (NSBP), SFSP, and WIC.
  • Direct HFNYC’s Summer Meals Outreach Program, including managing a team of AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates and interns in community outreach, to increase participation in SFSP in NYC.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with local, state, and federal child nutrition program administrators and keep abreast of program rules and regulations, policy guidance, and other issues regarding child nutrition programs.
  • Monitor major child nutrition policy developments; collaborate with the Policy and Communications Departments to respond, when appropriate.
  • Serve as NYCCAH’s main liaison with local, state, and federal officials, as well as local, state, and national nonprofit organizations and stakeholders, regarding child nutrition programs.
  • Provide technical assistance to NSBP, SFSP, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), and WIC sites to advance best practices that increase access and utilization of these programs; develop reports on best practices and challenges in those programs.
  • Collaborate with HFA’s Strategic Volunteerism Department to recruit and manage volunteers for outreach and other service opportunities with SFSP, WIC, and other child nutrition programs.
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to provide education, training, and technical assistance to national service participants and other partner organizations to increase their ability to conduct and coordinate child nutrition program outreach and volunteerism.
  • Collaborate with the Development Department to prepare proposals, progress reports, and other materials for funders.
  • Prepare draft materials – e.g. public testimony, grant proposals, fact sheets, press releases, outreach materials – for the media, funders, elected officials, partner organizations, and the public.
  • Create and update sections on the Hunger Free America website regarding child nutrition programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree with at least 4-5 years of related experience. A Master’s Degree in social work, public health, nutrition, public administration, public policy, non-profit management, or a related field is a plus.
  • Experience working at either a nonprofit organization or a government agency on outreach and/or policy work relating to child nutrition and/or federal safety net programs.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and managing child nutrition and/or related programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise staff, national service members, interns, and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of federal child nutrition programs and the NYC school system, including SchoolFood.
  • Experience providing training and technical assistance to non-profit organizations.
  • Excellent writing, communication, research, and analysis skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and management skills, with proven ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Positive, self-starter attitude; ability to take initiative, think creatively, and work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience in community engagement, including working in diverse neighborhoods and with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to Hunger Free America’s mission to end hunger in the United States.

Farm and Food Legal Fellow, Conservation Law Foundation (CLF)

Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is seeking a legal fellow to work in its Rhode Island Advocacy Center. Working with the director of the Rhode Island Advocacy Center, as well as program staff, the Rhode Island Farm and Food Legal Fellow will be responsible for a suite of work related to CLF’s Farm and Food Initiative. Responsibilities will include identifying and advocating for policy changes, building coalitions, developing and overseeing a direct legal assistance pro bono network, conducting outreach and trainings, and communicating with the press and the public.

This position is based in CLF’s Providence office. The position will be full-time for two years, with the possibility of extension contingent on fundraising.

The ideal candidate will:
  • Have a J.D. and be a member of a state bar (Rhode Island Bar membership strongly preferred);
  • Have experience working with issues relating to agriculture, aquaculture, or other elements of the food system;
  • Have experience working with private law firms;
  • Have demonstrated experience with policy advocacy;
  • Have strong interpersonal skills, including the proven ability to work with people from different backgrounds and communities;
  • Have the ability to understand and explain scientific issues related to CLF’s environmental advocacy;
  • Have excellent organizational skills;
  • Have exemplary oral and written communication skills;
  • Be able to manage multiple advocacy projects;

Local and Regional Food Systems Policy Advisor, USDA Marketing and Regulatory Programs

This position is located in the Office of the Administrator, Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). AMS facilitates the strategic marketing of agricultural products in domestic and international markets while assuring fair trading practices and promoting a competitive and efficient marketplace to the benefit of consumers of U.S. food and fiber products. The Office of the Administrator is responsible for the overall planning and administration of the broad marketing, regulatory, and related Departmental programs and activities assigned to AMS.

The incumbent serves as a Local and Regional Food Systems Policy Advisor and, as such, plays a critical role in advising Agency, Mission Area, and Departmental officials on key issues and decision-making processes on a variety of complex, important, and sometimes controversial activities concerning Departmental and interagency local and regional food systems policies and relevant programs. Primary responsibility includes coordination and leadership of the USDA Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative.

There are two positions associated with this vacancy.

  • The primary purpose of one position is to provide legal services to the Rural Development Mission Area, which provides financial and technical assistance to enhance economic development and improve the quality of life for rural America. The emphasis of this position will be advising on the single family and multi-family programs of the Rural Housing Service.

The Resnick Program for Food Law and Policy (“Resnick Program”) is dedicated to studying and advancing solutions for improving the modern food system. Covering a wide range of local, national, and global food law and policy topics and issues, the program seeks solutions in support of a food system that embodies the values of transparency, accountability, and equity and that yields improved health and sustainability outcomes for all.

ABOUT THE FOOD LAW AND POLICY CLINIC

The Resnick Program plans to launch a Food Law and Policy Clinic during the 2016-2017 academic year. The Food Law and Policy Clinic will be aimed at both student development and creating on the ground impacts. The clinic’s programmatic mission will be to facilitate sufficient access to socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable food and to improve food environments particularly for low income populations and marginalized communities. To achieve this goal, the program will provide assistance to groups who: 1) seek to expand healthy food access and improve food environments, and 2) are engaged in work that supports transition to sustainable food production and equitable distribution. The Clinic will train approximately eight to16 students per year (depending on whether the clinic runs one or two semesters) and focus on developing student skills, creative problem solving, professional responsibility, and an understanding of local government law and food law and policy issues.

Food Systems Consultant -- Washington State

The Washington State Food System Roundtable (FSRT) is looking for an
individual or a firm to work with our existing membership for approximately
eight months throughout the remainder of 2016.

Consultant Services Requested:  We want to build support to strengthen
Washington’s food system and are looking for individuals/firms that will
effectively communicate the Roundtable goals, successfully engage
stakeholders, and identify the most viable stewardship of the vision and
action strategies.

At this juncture we are looking for letters of interest (LOI) by May 10, 2016
from prospective consultants in two distinct areas:
1.      Staff Support:
Eight months of staffing support for furthering the work of the Roundtable.
This includes deep stakeholder engagement, preparing for and facilitating
Coalition meetings, finalizing the Prospectus and supporting the development
of a sustainable Stewardship model to ensure long-term sustainability.
2.      Communications:

FARMroots Legal Volunteer Opportunity, Greenmarket, GrowNYC

Greenmarket is a program of GrowNYC, a NYC-based non-profit organization. Greenmarket's mission is to promote regional agriculture and ensure a continuing supply of fresh local produce for New Yorkers. Greenmarket supports farmers and preserves farmland for the future by providing regional, small family farmers with opportunities to sell their fruits, vegetables and other farm products to New Yorkers.

FARMroots is Greenmarket’s Technical Assistance Program that provides both aspiring and established Greenmarket farmers with business technical assistance and training designed to ensure the long-term viability of participating farms and farmland. Legal Volunteer Opportunity Overview 

Responsibilities:

The summer legal volunteer will have the opportunity to contribute to a number of ongoing projects in the Technical Assistance areas listed above by providing legal support to all members of the FARMroots team. Responsibilities may include researching, drafting, and editing both internal and client-facing materials; correspondence with clients, partners, attorneys, consultants, and other stakeholders; and providing organizational and administrative support as needed. 

The summer legal volunteer will have exposure to the many areas of law that impact agricultural producers. Legal topics that may be encountered include business formation, contract negotiation, estate planning, real property leases, land use and conservation, tax, labor and employment, intellectual property, food safety, and regulatory issues.

Location: 

The summer legal volunteer will be located at the GrowNYC office in New York, NY.

Ideal Qualifications:

• Rising 2L or 3L 

• Strong research, analytical, writing, and communication skills 

• Ability to work independently, resourceful, and collaborative 

• A demonstrated commitment to food and agricultural law and policy issues 

• Background, coursework, or previous work experience in food or agriculture is preferred

Supervision:

The summer legal volunteer will be supervised by the FARMroots Program Director and the FARMroots Business Planning and Legal Specialist.

Time Commitment:

This summer legal volunteer opportunity requires a 10 to 12 week commitment, approximately 15 hours per week with some flexibility. This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. Students are highly encouraged to seek public interest fellowship funds or arrange to receive academic credit from their law school.
