The International Dairy Foods Association is seeking a Director of State Government Relations to lead state level advocacy for the U.S. dairy processing and manufacturing industry. Based in Washington, DC, this role develops and executes legislative strategies across multiple states, working directly with state legislators, governors’ offices, regulatory agencies, and industry partners to advance IDFA’s policy priorities. The position focuses on key issues such as labeling, food additives, sustainability, packaging, feeding programs, transportation, and broader food and agriculture regulation.
Responsibilities include monitoring and analyzing state legislation, coordinating multi-state advocacy campaigns, managing contract lobbyists, building coalitions, and mobilizing grassroots engagement among members and stakeholders. The Director will also develop policy materials, provide strategic political insights, and collaborate closely with internal government relations, regulatory, and communications teams to ensure aligned advocacy efforts. The role requires strong relationship building with policymakers and the ability to translate complex policy developments into clear guidance for industry stakeholders.
Candidates should have at least 7 years of experience in state government affairs or public policy, with a strong understanding of state legislative processes and experience managing multi-state advocacy efforts. Background in food, agriculture, or consumer products policy is preferred. This is a hybrid role based in Washington, DC, with approximately 30 percent travel.
